1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Installed the new exhaust flaps in the exhaust pipes. It originally had rubber flaps but I went with the stainless steel flaps made for Corsa exhausts. Had to cut the old pin out (which was vertical) and weld the new pin in the horizontal plane so the counterweight will shut the upper flap...

Alpha One Gen 1 transom assembly seal

I couldn't find it in the manual - I'm getting ready to install my transom assembly back onto the boat. I have a new foam rubber seal that goes in the groove all the way around the transom assembly - do I need to add any sealant to this seal besides a little bit of bellows adhesive in the...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I glassed in the two front supports for the bench seat today. This marks the last of the structural fiberglass work! A big milestone. I spent the rest of the entire day wet sanding and buffing the transom. I wanted to do this before I started attaching things to the transom. I had to...

Rehab SportCraft 222 1983 deep V hull cuddy walkaround

Yeah, my street/strip car is the real money suck. 🥵 ...and my wife and daughter don't really get to enjoy it. Of course they haven't gotten to enjoy the boat yet either. 😂

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I've been somewhat slow moving the last couple of weeks. I had my overhead power lines to the house put underground to make room for a carport to park the boat under - that was an ordeal. Next, I wanted to wait to make the front supports for the bench seat until I had the speakers - I finally...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

It's a cloth made up of two layers of non-woven roving that total 17 oz with a 0.8 oz CSM mat stitched to the back side. Each layer of roving fibers is laid 45 degrees to the direction of the roll/stitching. Since it's not woven and since the fibers are at an angle, the fibers can more easily...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

To me those do look like tiny bubbles - maybe from the wood soaking some resin out of the cloth in spots where it didn't take in enough resin from the first pass. Or, it could be from not getting the mat wet enough. For big 1708 layups onto wood (big = too large to pre-wet the mat side first)...

1996 Century Boats 1800 Center Console Refit and Modernization

I found that if I used the wheel as shown below, it left hardly any residue. If you use it where the wheel is spinning the other direction, it left lots of adhesive snot after removing the sticker, like you observed. Of course, your boat may have stickers that used a different adhesive, which...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

I bought some PVA but ended up not liking it. It's difficult to see once applied and dried and then how do you know you've got it all off? I'm sure it has its place, but I much prefer just adding wax to the last layer of glass/gelcoat. If you use laminating resin (no wax) and don't use PVA or...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Any time it's feasible, I pre-wet the mat-side of my 1708 on a sheet of plastic laid on a flat area, then after wetting, transfer the cloth to the area where it will be laid. The only time I do not use this method is for large areas like the top surface of the deck, where transferring a large...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

While that's probably true, who grinds/sands down the edges of their tabbing? I think there's arguments for both ways, but I just went with smallest first, as it made the most sense to me.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

3 layers of tabbing seems excessive to me, but if you've got the time, materials, and desire, go for it. I did 2 layers. I also have a strong preference for doing as much wet-on-wet layup as possible. Wet-on-wet is doable with 2 layers of tabbing...with 3 layers things might start to get away...

1996 Century Boats 1800 Center Console Refit and Modernization

What are you using to remove the decals/residue? I was very impressed with the 3M Stripe Off Wheel on a battery powered drill. Make sure the surface of the wheel is moving against the direction you are moving the drill. I removed reg numbers and pinstripes from my entire boat using one...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Finished the floor drain today. I used a hole saw to cut the hole then PB'd in a conduit fitting. I supported the bottom surface with plastic and blocks of wood. After it cured, I cut it down to height and shaped the depression in the floor so the drain will sit pretty close to flush. I...
