    That is for a rotary shift motor and that is to line up the splines. Your motor shifts on the up and down. There is a stepped cam down there that is next to impossible to get back in. It's your motor do what you want. FYI the bearing carrier is a left hand thread. Good luck.

    Very Common. Yes it is a feature of mostly for the easier starting of carbureted motors. It locks out the gear shifter so you can start it easier by using the throttle only function. Generally EFI motors do not need that feature, but it is built into the control so you get it.

    No there is a stepped cam on the bottom of that shift shaft. A spring loaded pin sits against that, if you pull the shift shaft out the pin slides back and almost impossible to get it back in. Besides that extension looks like it is for the top of the shaft. .

    If you pull the shift shaft out of the lower unit you have to take the lower unit apart to get it back in. What are you trying to do.

    Have you tried pumping the primer ball to see if that makes a difference? Are you going to do the compression and spark chek?

    The top screw is the low speed screw. Where are you located? Maybe time to join the AOMCI. The top screw should be set at either 3/4 or 1.5 turns out. Are you using the throttle ? The choke? To start it. The bottom screw is the high speed screw and is held in with a packing nut to prevent it...

    To set low speed screw. Turn screw in until the motor sneezes then back off 1/4 turn. If it bogs on acceleration open another 1/8 turn. Continue until it idles good and accelerates without hesitation. The high speed needle you set when running wide open. Turn screw to rich until it stutters...

    Test your stator high speed windings are a known failure on those.

    In the owners manual for my dad's 92 15 hp that is called a throttle lock. It locks the throttle in place for trolling speeds.

    The knob the red button sticks out of can be turned. It is a throttle lock for trolling, if it is turned it will keep the idle high or low.

    It is because the newer block is a much more forgiving on setting the low speed. The 78 should pretty much be a set it and forget it. If you have to keep adjusting it you either have something wrong or just can't keep your hands off the adjustment.
