no oil after cylinder head recondition

While you have the Lifters out, flush the Oil System with the primer. Make sure the Passages between the Lifters are clear of that sludge too. Soak the New Lifters Vertically in Oil overnight. Even when you drain the Oil from the Pan, there can still be Sludge all over the bottom of the Engine...

    Carb rebuild question

My Volvo service Manuals don't show that number but it is for the 2002 motors. My other book doesn't have it either I suggest contacting Holley and a Volvo Penta Dealer. There are many 2300s on various VP motors, Jetting and Power Valve selection is all over the map, so the proper specs are...

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Take the Lifters out and then run the Priming Tool/Pump, that will verify Oil is getting to the first Lifter on the Side, and allows you to clean out any guck between the Lifters. As for the Lifters, I would either replace them, or take them apart and clean them to get all the water out of them

Mercury 80 won't crank with plugs installed

Removing the Plugs, allowed the Liquid to drain, removing the cause of the Hydrolock. A very slightly bent/twisted Rod, can cause Binding/Tight spots, but still allow rotation, even complete rotation of the Crankshaft.

    Prop Question... Bayliner BR185

Diameter doesn't have as much effect as Pitch, however Pitch and Dia are only 2 Variables when it comes to Props, though a lot of Props, but not all, do increase in Diameter as Pitch drops. Blade Area, Flat or Progressive Pitch, Cup, and Rake are other things that come into Play. That is one of...

    Prop Question... Bayliner BR185

Did the WOT Rpm Change as the Prop got Massaged? You are propped pretty close to Optimum. Dropping 4" in Pitch will unload the Engine way too much, and increase the WOT Rpms to about 5400. Try to find a 20" Prop, that should give you a couple of Hundred more Rpm. That assumption is based on the...

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Oil gets up to the Rocker Arms via the Lifters and the Push Rods. You say there was water in the Oil. Did you flush/clean out all the Oil passages before New Lifters were installed? Or did you reuse the old Lifters? Same goes for all the Push Rods?

    Prop Question... Bayliner BR185

Before you go buying Props, a few questions 1) how long have you owned this boat? 2) What condition is the Motor in, as in: Compression Numbers, Spark at all Cylinders, Spark Plugs? 3) What WOT Rpm are you getting with the current Prop? 4) Do you know the WOT Rpm range for that Motor? If you...

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

Running like this starved the Engine of Water, and the heat warped the Water Jacket Cover, resulting in the all too familiar water leaking from the Spark Plug resulting in this being required

Tinkering on the 4.3l this winter...

If that is an engine out of a Car/Truck, it is not going to be much use in a boat, until some Changes are made to it.

Tinkering on the 4.3l this winter...

230 out of a 4.3? maybe at about 5700 rpm 205-210 would be about the limit and still have any bottom end torque

    Quadrajet Replacement Options

The only Plug and Play Carb will be a used on from an Identical Engine(model and year), or from Mercrusier(not likely viable), otherwise it is Plug and Pray. Personally I wouldn't touch a Carter/Weber/Edelbrock carb, but that is me. I like Q-jets and Holleys

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

Mercury's big inlines had gear housings that were more Hydrodynamically Efficient with Gear Ratios and Props that were miles ahead of what OMC was offering in the 60s on most of its V4s, hence one of the reasons Mercs could outrun the Competition

    Which battery is best?

As Always, People should check the Owners Manual first. Of course REAL Men NEVER read an Owner/Operator Manual....

    Which battery is best?

No, all Marine Batteries are not Deep Cycle. If you want to run both, Cranking Battery for the Engine, and Deep Cycles for all the Electronics, then a way of Isolating them from each other, with regards to Charging, unless your Outboard, has 2 separate Charging Systems(I know my OMC FICHTs did)...

Black scuff marks on cylinder walls

Going back in the yrs, it appears that 1991 was the last yr there was an O-ring at the top of the Driveshaft. There would be an O-ring included in the Water Pump Kit, if the Kit was covering a large number of years.
