    Low compression - 1986 Mercury classic 50

Welcome to iboats It doesn't sound all that Bad, however, running on the Muffs, really does tell anyone much, as it could be running on 2 cylinders, as there is no Backpressure, not being in the water, at Docked/anchoured Depth. Running tilted like that also creates its own problems as the Fuel...

    Mid1980's Mercury 2cyl 35hp Spark Plug Question

Fogging is the Term used for Spraying a quantity of Storage Oil into the Carbs, to coat the Rotating Assembly, protecting it from Corrosion during longer term Storage. Doing it, results in a Fog of Smoke. Applying Power Tune via the Plug Holes is done when the Piston Rings are badly Carboned...

    What oil should I use?

GM used to, maybe still does, market an Oil Supplement, aptly called Engine Oil Supplement(EOS) which they recommended during Break In. I recall the printing on the Can, saying it was good for Cam Break In. It was a delightful Chemical Stew, that while Thicker than Oil, it was runny compared to...

    What oil should I use?

Poppycock. I switched, from Dino Oil to Synthetic on an Engine with 110,000 miles on it, and it didn't leak, or burn it any faster. It now has over 250,000 miles on it and still No Difference.

I am more Familiar with the 2 Stroke OMCs which said 4500rpm in the 2nd Hour, with 4 or 5 bursts of WOT for about 2 minutes, returning to 4500

Bursts of Full Throttle are required Parts of a Proper Break-in Procedure, though usually not until well into the 2nd Hour.

    towing - engine in neutral?

I remember doing the Multiple Guess Test a few Decades ago. A lot of it was about Harbour Lights, Channel Markings, and those Floating Things. None of those are used out in the Land of the Right Wingnuts(Alberta)

    towing - engine in neutral?

Bunk Trailers are the Reason, as the friction is too high to winch on. Backing in Deeper, results in ruined Diffs and boat that aren't centered on the Trailer. Roller Trailers, work well with winches but not power loading.

    4.3 spark arrestor replacements

I never knew non-marine boats existed, except the old Land Yachts of the Mid 70s

    4.3 spark arrestor replacements

A lot of work/expense for very little increase in power, plus the cost of Premium and likely an Octane Booster. If you want more Power, you will need a bigger Engine. A 4bbl won't do much if anything, unless it was too Small to begin with. A Holley 500cfm 2bb(370 cfm when flow rated like a 4bbl)...

How do you all like your remote oil filter setups?

I like them installed with the Flow going through the Filter the Correct Direction. 22yrs ago, when I bought my Boat, I had the Dealer install the Remote Filter. 2 Seasons later, at about 100hrs, the engine sounded like it had Mechanical Lifters. I happened to touch the Oil Filter nad noticed it...

    Mid1980's Mercury 2cyl 35hp Spark Plug Question

While a lot of Oils(3rd Party) are said to Meet the TCW-3 Spec, that spec is over 30 yrs old. The Engine Manufacturers have Skin in the Game, and they know that if an Engine blows Up, throws a Rod, etc, People will cuss and swear at the Engine Brand, because to them Oil is Oil. I suspect the OEM...

Random change in rpm at wot...BIG CHANGE

Without knowing what the WOT Rpm is, you can't arbitrarily claim a sweet spot. You do not prop for a Speed at a certain/preferred Rpm, regardless of how the Engine Sounds

1988 Merc 115 inline 6-Rough in low gear only after WOT

My 1984 inline 115 didn't have a Low Gear. I wonder if the Idle Stabilizer was disconnected? I know a lot of People say to unhook it, but Mine never gave any Trouble, even after 14 yrs. My 115 used to get Stuck Floats quite regularly and would run crappy, but I could also see Fuel dripping out...
