1997 Mercury Force 120 - Loss of Power - Hard to Start

Compression is good. Spark plugs are kinda dirty, but still should work. You should drain the carbs and see if you have water or dirt. Gas will soak into a rag, water will bead up on that rag. Use a white rag so you can see any dirt. I think you have carb issues. Maybe you have some...

    Tachometer not working right

First of all, the tach is set to "4". It should be set to "6". Mercs generally uses the 12P or 6C settings, whichever you have. Also, some tachs have a separate connection for nav lights. You have the +12VDC connected to the light. Is it possible that the other screw is for running the tach...

Tilt and Trim 150hp Mercury v6

Fluid should never come out of the PTT unit when bleeding. If it does, you have found an issue. To bleed that system, trim it all the way up and fill the reservoir. Now cap the reservoir and cycle it down and up, topping off and capping the reservoir. Repeat as necessary, until all the air...

    Fuel dripping from carbs...

Some of the early V6 motors do not have replaceable floats. Be careful with your floats until you see if they are replaceable.

Tilt and Trim 150hp Mercury v6

I would make sure the manual release is tight. I am not sure of the tightening spec, however. Is there fluid leaking out of the unit? Has the reservoir been topped off and the unit bled? The center trim cylinder rides on a pin drilled to allow hydraulic fluid to flow to the trim cylinder...

Merc 260 fit in Winns 190 Horizon bay?

Are the front motor mounts in the right place for that V8? Is the deck cut enough to allow the V8 length? Side clearance should be the same.

    Shoreline Trailer Highlander Series

Eastern marine has a whole lot of trailer parts. They may have shorelander stuff, or at least you should be able to match up some parts. What is it you need?

1996 Evinrude OMC VRO Intermittent No Spark

Black/yellow wire is ign killer. If it is grounded anywhere, it will kill the spark. I suspect it has rubbed thru the insulation somewhere. Disconnect the ign killer wire at the powerpack, and see if you have good, permanent spark. Be prepared to kill motor with choke during this test. If...

Spun hub or lower unit problem?

Gee, I thought you said it was at the limit of it's adjustment. Control boxes should be readily available.

    Process for changing boat trailers?

Gee, I dropped my speedboat on the ground, the motor tilted up enough. I then backed up the new trailer and d/c it from the car and winched it on. The key is to allow the trailer to go under the boat, vs dragging the boat. It also allows the tongue to go high. Of course, my speedboat is...

Spun hub or lower unit problem?

Some of the older control cables have a screw clamp that holds the end on. If you have that, you may be able to loosen the clamp and move the end to shorten the cable a bit. Post a picture of the engine end of the cable.

    '85 Merc 50HP 2-Stroke - Rich/Lean Adjustment

No, the engine must be in gear, with a prop installed to set the carbs. On the water is the best for those of us without a professional test tank. The design of those plugs look a bit different than what I expected, and I have worked with a lot of BUHW spark plugs. I don't remember the...

Ever wonder where all the hurricane and storm surge boats wind up ?

When we had Hurricane Sandy here in NJ, many boats were liberated from their blocks at various marinas. Nearly every neighbor had one in his yard after the storm. The marina came to collect them eventually. I was lucky enough (sic) to get my neighbors 20 footer w/ Yammie 150. It went from...

    Lucky Day

Unfortunately, PTT motors do fail. Here on the salt pond, they can rust thru the outer casing. At least that is what happened to my Merc PTT motor (likely made by ARCO), and the boat lived on a lift. My Johnnyrude OEM PTT motor from '98 is just fine, and that lives in the water 7 mos. a...

    '85 Merc 50HP 2-Stroke - Rich/Lean Adjustment

Most Mercs use a gas screw, vs an air screw. That means that tightening the screw leans out the mixture. Usually you start at 1-1/2 turns open and adjust from there under load in water, at idle, with a warm engine. Normally you need to richen them up from there a bit to allow acceleration...

    Hard steering.

Something else that can help is to figure out where the steering is corroded. Usually it is the top bushing of the swivel shaft. If you can get some grease into the offending bushing, it can loosen up. If the top bushing needs grease, tilt the motor up fully. I then use a rope around the...
