Alpha 1 Gen 1 oil fill hose

Castrol Super Clean (and the generic "Purple Stuff") is a good degreaser. Use full strength, wait a bit then wipe it down and hose it off.

Cant seem to find information on motor.

Maxrules has a serial number to year table.

Smoke, high temps and louder than normal

Impeller replacement is the same on most motors. The gearcase must come off, the impeller, wearplate and 2 gaskets must be replaced, as a minimum. If the cup in the waterpump top is scratched, replace that. If the waterpump base is melted or the driveshaft seal is bad, replace the waterpump base.

    No spark on Merc 85hp

OK, next test is to see if you have spark. You must have +12VDC on the red wire and the adjacent white wire on the switchbox to have spark. If you have spark, spray some 50::1 into the carbs, close the choke shutters and crank her up, cold start lever all the way up. If she doesn't fire...

    No spark on Merc 85hp

Those quick disconnect plugs often can be the area of high resistance. For testing purposes, you can wire the battery directly to the starter solenoid and the ground bolt on the lower cowling. Standard battery cables will allow this. Are the ground straps from the block to the lower...

    No spark on Merc 85hp

I could not get the video to play for some reason. If she turns slow with a good battery, the wiring is bad or the starter is bad.

    Adding A Sail

Trawlers often had a "balance" sail. It was not meant to power them, just to act as a stabilizer.

Removal of Flex Seal coating from hull?

Gee, a few more like that and I predict you will be the one looking for a home. (smile)

Alpha 1 Gen 1 oil fill hose

Alpha 1 gen 1 drives did not have reservoirs, that I know of. A 1984 boat orig equipment would have been A1 G1 drives, so maybe you have replacement drives. I once had a Merc OB with a stripped gearcase drain plug. Someone had tapped it oversize and installed a brass (or bronze) insert like a...

Idle / Slow speed timing advancement screw missing?

Shocks from spark plug wires indicate they are bad.

    50 amp braker

MerCruisers have not used Ford engine in a very long time. They use either native blocks or GM blocks. A lot of the MerCruiser's blocks have a solenoid on the starter, plus a slave solenoid mounted on the lock or manifold. BTW, I am just trying to help you find your short... Not many items...

    50 amp braker

Gee, that implies that the starter solenoid is shorting, I would think, as starters are not usually fused. MerCruiser's have a slave starter solenoid. that would be a culprit, if you have one. Not sure you motor has one.

    1984 Johnson 35hp 2 stroke - Ignition Switch Wiring

Go to the maxrules web site and find a wiring diagram for your motor. Or just trace 'em out. The new ign switch has the new wiring color codes. Red is battery, purple is ign power, yellow/red is starter solenoid, purple/white is choke. Black is ground. The black/white is ign killer.

    50 amp braker

Normally a 50A breaker (600watts) is not enough to fuse a starter. They can easily pull 200A on a 5.0L motor in normal operation. Starters are therefore usually not fused. I would trace the breaker wire and see where it goes. Power Trim and slave solenoid, plus the balance of the dashboard...

    Tilt Tube maintenance

Gee, if you put a wrench on both nuts, one of them should unscrew. That solves 1/2 your issue. If the port cap unscrews, you are good. You could lift the motor a bit and pull the tilt tube out (use a wrench and wiggle it). Then a pipe wrench just inside of the threads should hold. The pipe...

    Outboards that will charge battery

Generally the electric start OBs of that era will charge the battery, if they are electric start. The charging systems are minimal, say 6 or 9 amps. I do not know the specifics of those motors, however. If you have engine model numbers you could look up the charging system parts on...

DIY How to build an outboard stand with a 275lbs+ rating

Gee, wiggle the motor side to side and see how the stand responds. I always felt it was too wobbly and screwed some 2x4s front and back across the width of the stand to give it side to side stability. I do not have any pics as the stand was disassembled after I no longer needed it.

    Re-powering a 1978 21' Starcraft Mariner - Engine Help!

A 140HP motor with a short shaft would be unusual. You might measure from antiventilation plate to transom clamp. A SS motor is about 15". A long shaft motor would be 20", which is much more standard for that year and HP.

    Tilt Tube maintenance

A jam nut might hold the tilt tube in place. Alternatively, smacking the port cap with a dull, cold chisel, might break it loose. If it is really a problem, cut the port cap with a Dremel and crack it with a chisel, and replace it.
