The torque values are usually stamped on the cylinder head and other covers as well in most OB's brands. Is the torque around 25 NM ? Happy Boating

Would Aluminum tritoon bottom paint be absolutely needed in saltwater for just six weeks?

In salt water micro organisms starts to grow in less than 2 weeks if the hull, toons have not been treated with antifouling paint soon after the standard bottom paint has been applied. Any Karcher type washing machine will take care of any growth... Happy Boating

Vintage Tohatsu M9.8A fires right up! Impeller & fuel line options?

Don't know that precise model as never have physically seen one. To remove the lower leg check for a round brass tube joint that holds both upper and lower rods together which is located between the lower and the middle leg, remove the upper spring pin banging hard with a round punch tool with...

Vintage Tohatsu M9.8A fires right up! Impeller & fuel line options?

You're welcome Dave, I like working on oldie motors myself as long they can still work without needing any new part, worse if extremely obsolete and with NLA or hard to find part for them. If the current motor still works fine use it as is, wouldn't worry too much about finding new spare parts...

Vintage Tohatsu M9.8A fires right up! Impeller & fuel line options?

That 9.8 HP oldie of yours has nothing to do compared to any modern 9.8 HP, it's one of its kind. So impossible to swap new spare parts for it. Swipe your tongue through the lower unit, will know if was used in salt water. LOL !! Happy Boating

2 Stroke Yam 85 HP Thermo Removal.-

Was wondering how friendly would be to remove the thermo and the poppet valve located under the thermo cover without breaking the original thermo gasket as seems it's made of an excellent material quality.. ? I know, simply install a new one, in this particular case not available any time soon...

    Engine Height

Nope if engine sits too low will produce water splashes out or over transom, if sits too high will produce prop aeration/ventilation when combo is on plane. Happy Boating

    Cylinder Compression Incongruences.-

This motor powers a mediun size dinghy which is used as a transport for several boats. Lives on salt water and never was flushed before, the nasty found condition says it all. To restore it to a working condition will take several more hours of work although the cosmetic appearance will remain...

overheating - looking for a cause

If a motor overheats not necessarily means that all water passages will be found clogged. What really happens is that with time and use all the water passages begins to collect thin salt layers one on top of the other that will eventually decrease the water passages diameters due to being...

overheating - looking for a cause

Does that model have a flushing port built in the crankcase, if so remove thermo, put cap back on and flush with water at high pressure. Could use a Karcher washing machine set at min pressure for that task. Or remove the lower leg and use high water pressure or high air pressure connected to...

overheating - looking for a cause

Would be ideal to get the Parts Manual for that model and check all the water related covers the powerhead works with, if having a poppet valve ? Will know which parts to remove and clean. Good to order a new thermo switch. Happy Boating

    Cylinder Compression Incongruences.-

The only possible way to perfectly remove that filthy stuff deeply adhered all around the lower leg was with the aide of a Karcher Washing Machine set at the highest setting. The water pump's liner was found in excellent condition, just needed a micro polishing with toothpaste and a Dremel to...

overheating - looking for a cause

Some issues : If the thermo was found at a very nasty condition, imagine all the internal powerhead's water passages condition which could be similar and already narrowed after 47 years of constant use, that's motor not dissipating heat well and not cooling as it should. Will need to...

Motor has started but now no spark

Was the kill-cord attached ? If so. Disconnect both cables that hooks to the CD and measure its Ohm Resistance. Should be somewhere 130-300 Ohm. If reads 0 the Exciter Coil is shot or the Coil's internal cables that clamps outside the flywheel against something are broken. Happens with use and...
