Lexus Oil Leaks and Mechanic (Woes)

Another whining car problems post... How hard is it to find a GOOD mechanic shop? Or just a good mechanic; because in a shop with multiple guys (like most are), you don't really know what you're going to get. I tried a new place with the son's Lexus ('02 ES300), to address some oil leaks...

Starting your car in this cold weather.

Warm up the battery (by putting a little load on it first)? Sounds somewhat feasible, but I would've thought it more likely to drain some of whatever it's got to give. Never heard that.

Starting your car in this cold weather.

I feel a little odd/in the wrong decade/lifetime starting my '74 GM pickup - which I'm reduced to driving at the moment - on these cold mornings (5F the other day). Over 200k; has 2 or 3 plug extenders due to unaddressed valve stem seals and o-rings; needs a new battery so I'm happy that it...

Open Bow Center Windshield MUST Be Closed While Underway

Terrible. The term "bow rider" isn't so great either. I gave one of my kids a scare my first season while cutting back over our own wake/turbulent water and he was up there getting light on the seat and NOT enjoying it. No more after that. Having anyone up there cuts forward visibility too.

    Keel rollers?

My middle one apparently does nothing but scratch the hull (the mounting bracket corner of it) if I try to recover the boat by rolling it on and it's not exactly centered. It doesn't support any weight with it loaded. There's one more forward and one more rearward (each attached to a pivoting...

    So I know I have a sig 1911 45 caliber

I was kidding the OP a bit. Title and original post and that brought it on, lol.

    So I know I have a sig 1911 45 caliber

Does it still have a serial number? (Lol)

    Tarps

I've never tried lacing a rope through the eyelets (sidenote)... I've got it lashed down like a boy scout tent with ropes at four corners, and wooden tighteners. Takes more space up. Plenty of ventilation under the sides though, even if I put some bungee cords there. The one I was...

    Grease Zerk Fitting Question . . .

When I rebuilt the steering linkage on the Caprice I had, I on purpose got the greasable parts. Mighta been dumb, but made me feel like it all got one good greasing, at least, lol. My son just had a non-greasable balljoint come apart on his '03 Mustang GT, so... Got a zerk on the (front...

    Acura 3.2L Noise?

Good idea, will try that... No, no codes in a while. Did get crankshaft position sensor a couple of times, and it ran different when that came up, cruise disconnected, etc.

    Automotive Diagnostic Tool

Thought I replied to this; maybe didn't send or something. Thanks, and I tried the vaccum tube to the ear, but didn't get anywhere with it. Do need to get a stethoscope...

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

Interesting thought about jarring during trailering; also about the forces on it when underway. I was talking about aerial boom lifts; I've never gotten under a car w/o jackstands either. I store mine with the drive down. Don't raise it all the way to trailer; not really necessary.

    End of season maintenance checks…

Did you just hook up at the top port to do the pressure and vac check?

    End of season maintenance checks…

I'll settle for getting the leaves that got in the last couple days vacc'ed out and the cover on before the rain later today, lol. Winterized yesterday and did note that the gear oil's kinda dirty. An engine oil change wouldn't hurt either. Maybe lightly file the points. Never did get to the...

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

I put a tie-down strap around mine hooked to the ski-tow thing for the first year or so I had it (like yours, not lowered onto the strap though). It just seemed like extra insurance or something. Don't remember the exact thinking for discontinuing that, but do remember realizing that aerial...

    Greasing the Gimbal

I probably do it more than enough then, though I haven't in the last couple of times out. I took it out for the last trip of the season yesterday, mainly to circulate some Sta-bil through the carb, and thought I picked up just a hint of a different sound than I remember from the back, like a...
