    Rough running Evinrude V90

That plastic yoke attached to the throttle cam controls timing as the throttle plates open till the timing plate reaches the max advance stop. You didn't mess with that did you? That's the pickup timing and is set for a specific timing just as the roller meets the cam and aligns with the...

    Rough running Evinrude V90

Check the connection to the small wire on each coil. If they aren't making a good connection due to corrosion or the wire being almost broken it'll run like that. Mine was acting kind of like that and when I pulled on one of the wires the connector broke off. Fixed that and it ran well. Be sure...

    Rough running Evinrude V90

That is a coating the manufacture put on there. It's green in color.

Can piston rings wear before cylinder wall?

Out of curiosity, did you put the rings in the bores and measure the end gaps. Wonder how much wear there is. I used to replace just the rings on two cycle racing motorcross bikes all the time with the same pistons with no problems. However, I will say that two cycle motors are hard on...

Johnson J90TLCNB 1982 90 hp; speedy sleeve for driveshaft?

Well I happen to have one. Had rust in there where the seals ride. The motor was used in salt water for just a few years of it's life. Must be 304 stainless or lesser grade. I've used those speedy sleeves on boat trailer spindles and a few other things and they work great. I'll have to take...

    Won't Start!

Either swap wires going to the coils or swap plug wires and see if it cranks. You have to have the right wires to the correct cylinders.

Appears no one has done this before.

Johnson J90TLCNB 1982 90 hp; speedy sleeve for driveshaft?

Ok, this old 90 has some slight pitting on the driveshaft from salt water right where the seals ride below the water pump where it enters the housing. I don't really care to put a new driveshaft in her as old and rough looking as she is, plus I'm not sure I could even get the bearing carrier...

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

I would unhook the fuel line, let it run until it just starts to miss, then manually close the choke. It should die. The black and yellow wire coming from the power pack kills it as well when grounded. Should be terminal 6 which is the bottom left wire.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

That stinger has low hours on it. Either that or the owner took very good care of it. No way would I take it apart for a rebuild and you haven't even heard it run.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

I would imagine they are fine. Check impella, change gear case oil, clean carbs, change and gap plugs. Make sure the fuel line and plug wires are ok and run it. Personal I would want the original head back on it. Get you a used one off of eBay for the UD motor.

The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

Give that stinger a tune-up and run her. That ain't a 70s and 80s Mercury we're talking about. I've pulled them Johnyrudes out of the woods after sitting 10 years and had them running and on the lake in a couple of hours.

1987 Evinrude 88 SPL Ticking Noise

If they left the head bolts like that, you got to wonder what else is that way. I would be scared to trust it

That would be the FICHT wouldn't it? I remember folks hating on those.

1990 150 HP V6 Leak Down Fail. Help!

To be honest, I wasn't exactly sure how the oil got to the cylinder on those engines. I know some newer ones were directly injected only where it's needed, for example the eTech. I've seen these guys running their engines on starting fluid with stopped up carbs and I'm like, what the heck are...

1990 150 HP V6 Leak Down Fail. Help!

One last thing, take your fingers on one hand and pull the piston over to the side to kind of lock it in place, then rock the flywheel back and forth to see it there is any slack in the wrist pins or connecting rods.

1990 150 HP V6 Leak Down Fail. Help!

I would check the other side and if it's in similar condition, reassemble with new gaskets and run it a bit. Take compression readings so you know what's happening with it. Since it's been sitting for 8 years, after running things might improve.

1990 150 HP V6 Leak Down Fail. Help!

Another thing, if you ever suspect a carb may have problems on a motor with multiple carbs and cylinders, don't run it. Take the carbs apart and make sure they all are clean, getting fuel, and jets are open. Running one that's not getting fuel with oil in it to a cylinder or two while running...

1990 150 HP V6 Leak Down Fail. Help!

Well, not too bad. I do see some light scoring. Also see what looks like etching where there was some patches of light rust on the cylinder walls at some point. With that said, based on looks I would think the compression should be good enough to run ok.
