2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

No coring, no foam, etc. Right? It is a little hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like the cracked area may be a void (air pocket) in the lifting strake (the same area that shows the clipped gelcoat on the outside of the hull). This would most likely be a manufacturing defect when...

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

Also . . . Has this boat been in an area where temperatures get below freezing . . . 0˚ C ? (I know the OP is in New Zealand) If a cuddy compartment had a significant amount of water in it at some point and was allowed to freeze it would create an outward bulge in the hull and possibly lead...

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

Sorry for the multiple posts, but . . . Here is a picture of your boat (same boat). You need to look in the storage compartment after having removed the cushions and see what the inside of the hull looks like in the area of question. . . Post some pictures of that area, if you can.

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

Here is a Sea Ray factory video that shows how the boats are made. It is from a slightly newer era than your boat, but their methods look traditional. At one point they talk about coring in the cockpit/deck mold, and they state there is no coring in the hulls. Here are a couple of photos...

    Freshwater Boat to Saltwater

Outboards do not (should not) live in the water, so it may not be surprising that you would not find aluminum anodes for it. If you can get Zinc, then fine. Just don't use magnesium. Be sure to tilt the outboard up out of the water when not in use. Sterndrive boats that live in the salt...

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

No, I doubt that you will find any coring material under the fiberglass. I would not drill into the area either. It looks to be from an impact or over stress in that area. Do your investigation from the inside of the boat (i.e. the cuddy cabin) and remove cushions, open storage areas until...

No compression with rocker arms torqued

What about the boat? Maybe water logged?

8.1 GXI-J Cranks but No Start w/ Diacom Logs

The engine can probably be rebuilt. No need to make predictions at this point

    Check those wheel bearings . . .

I got a couple of grease tubes and proceeded to pump the other axles with more grease. Looks like I’ll be replacing bearings on 2 wheels, not just one. The original grease Zerks are the pressed-in type and one of them came off with the grease gun. I’m thinking that I should replace them all...

No compression with rocker arms torqued

Rocker arm noise. . .Usually it is after the engine is all buttoned up. Not sure what the spec is for the adjustable valves, the Mark IV engines were 1/2-1 full turn IIRC. 1/4 turn seems light. Maybe get everything adjusted and then run the engine for a while to be sure.

No compression with rocker arms torqued

Glad you found the issue. The Gen 5 454's were not fan favorites because of the valve train. Now with the conversion kit you should be good to go. Just make sure 1/4 turn beyond 0 lash is enough.

    Fiberglass resin question

Polyester resin often has wax mixed in to provide a barrier to air while the resin cures. The wax 'floats' to the surface of the resin after application providing the barrier. It sounds like that is what you are referring to(?) The are resins that don't have wax mixed in are typically used...

FWIW - here are some pictures of rolling my sailboat over of working on the bottom. As the saying goes . . . "Don't try this at home . . . "

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

The boat is 23 years old . . . the hull appears to be solid according to the 'hammer' test. If the hull was that bad off, you would have thought it would have sunk by now. Mechanics are not necessarily experts on boat hulls and boat construction (right?) If you are really concerned, then have...

    Rolling boat over

I flipped my 19' sailboat over (1400 lbs) using some straps and rollers supported from my garage ceiling. It got to the point of no return and then suddenly flipped the rest of the way all al once (not recommended). But there are a variety of ways to do it. The key thing is to support the...

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

@Friscoboater has a fairly extensive thread on restoring his 1997 (ish) SeaRay of similar size. So, take a look at his thread (search for it) and you will learn more about the construction. 2000 model years may still be wood. I would also verify the 'soft spot', as it appears to be in the...

What does wood free hull actual mean

As time goes on there is less wood in boats. Some manufacturers went wood-free a while ago, but that is not to say that all manufacturers don't use wood. For those that do use wood they use a rot-resistant wood known as 'KDAT'. Common product names are 'Greenwood XL' and 'Perma Panel'. The...

Looking for a larger boat that I can trailer

In my recent boat search, I looked at the Donzi ZSF and the Intrepids. Towing aside, The helm position is significantly far to the stern of the boat, which some folks may not like from a handling perspective around docks, etc. Since you had a center console boat, you may not mind the layout...
