1975 Merc 7.5 thunderbolt hard starting

I suspect there was something 'stuck' in the carburetor (or reed valve) and running it with the fuel system cleaner got it worked out. BTDT.

Replaced prop with the "same" spec prop. Loss of bottom end.

Cupped prop. . . probably making the difference.

Still thinking you have a fuel problem. Did you run a heavy dose of fuel system cleaner (of your choice) in the fuel? 15 minutes is not very long, but probably OK, if you had fuel system cleaner in the gas. Time to open the Toolbox. Maybe a full rebuild of the carburetor - replace...

OK, understood. Are you also using starting fluid into the carburetor to get the motor to start? (you mentioned adding some fuel directly to the cylinders . . .) I'd get the engine running, have a hefty amount of fuel system cleaner in the gasoline, go boating so the engine gets run under...

ECM Swap ? Plug and play ???

I think @alldodge is one of the few folks here who had their ECM tinkered with (by a high performance marine engine mechanic) to gain some HP on the top end. Certainly not a Plug 'n Play sort of undertaking. I have been running ECM/PCM controlled engines for about 11 years, and would say that...

Hard/impossible to see the seals, but if you can get the engine running you can see if you are getting any signs of fuel running down the outside crankcase. Not sure about the lower seal . . . Also the crankcase halves are held together by about 6 bolts on each side. They should be plenty...

Sounds like you have a fuel problem, since you have covered the other bases. You can try some of the snake oil stuff (PowerTune, SeaFoam, etc.) to see if that improves things. Otherwise you would be opening the toolbox as mentioned.

    Stamas 244 freedom

You probably won't find anything - often documentation of the details on the boat's systems, wiring, plumbing, etc. never existed. The joy of older boat ownership is that you get to figure it out for your self (sorry to say).

If you mean 'send' as in a Private Message (PM), there is the option to do it. I have not tried it, but . . .

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

A judgement call in the fuel tank as to if it can be saved. Check to see if there is a certification label with the material and thickness. I would not go with any pits that are deeper than 1/3 the thickness. Also see if you can get a glimpse inside the tank for any internal corrosion/pits...

1975 Merc 7.5 thunderbolt hard starting

My 1969 7.5 Mercury is a '5 pull' start, but it always starts. I did at one point have to fully disassemble the carburetor (Tillotson carb IIRC) and do a re-build kit on it. Also, assuming you have done the primer bulb thing to get fuel up to the carb. I usually have to start the engine on...

Old 9.9 Mercury looking for year made. 0B390028

+1 for 1989 model year. Looks like there is a 'tiller shift' and a 'side shift' version of the motor. So, assuming to are looking to take a 'side shift' and make it a 'tiller shift' (and throttle). It might be easier to get a tiller version of the same/similar motor.
