    Outdrive failure?

    I Have rebuilt many mercruiser drives that burned up the upper gear set. I just pulled the rear bearing carrier and flushed out the housing. New seals and upper gears, good as new. What ever you do be sure that the drive can hold 10-15 psi. If the seller cannot show that keep looking.

    Have you tried removing the fuel rail nd blowing it out with compressed air. Maybe there is something stuck in the rail in the fitting that the injector plugs into.

    A vacuum gauge helps with the boat in the water. Quadrajets are usually happy at 3 turns out. But the idle stop screw has to be set where the next circuit is not coming on. Looking down into the Venturi there should not be any fuel bubbling from the boosters.

    I bet that if you pull the drive the driveshaft bellows will have water in it. Have you tried the power tilt, it may have water in it also. If you pull the drive then it would be a good time to pull the engine. That way you can clean the bilge and do any repairs from water damage.

    There is a good chance you have a head gasket leak. Your first post mentions an overheat event. Since you are drawing water from a thru hull fitting rules out the drive incoming water.

    SEI preload and a stern jack

    Just curious, how much more speed did the stern jack provide? Does the boat “chine walk” when trimmed out? Does the boat have a “hook” near the transom? Checkmates are fast hulls as there was a dealer for them years ago here in New Orleans. Most had Mercury outboards.

    Are the engines fresh water cooled? If so check the coolant level. If the coolant is full then it might just be an exhaust manifold riser. I they are raw water cooled it could be plenty of things. Since you are a mechanic pulling the plugs as you said would be the first place to check.

    Your engine should have had a Petronics electronics module. The reason why the backfiring was happening is the rotor shaft got rusted and wears out the rubbing block on the points. Possible that the original module went out and someone put points in. You can add a Petronics kit, it just drops...

    350 mag idle vibration

    If the engine had not been started for a period of time before the service it could be a compression problem. A weak cylinder will smooth out with increased rpm.

    Is my shifter installed right?

    You have it right. It is normal for the propeller to “ratchet” when the drive is in either gear. If it did that in neutral then the shift is not splined right.
