    carburetor suspect problems

In addition to the carburetor suggestions. Something else to consider, if your distributor is a breaker point style check that the centrifugal advance is not sticking. Also check that the +or bat side of the coil is getting a full 12 volts in cranking mode.

Water in Oil (Again) Head Scratcher

It appears that one of manifolds or a riser is the source of the water. The reason that water is on both sides is the exhaust passage under the intake will cause water to be on both sides. Blow out the water by spinning it over then spray oil in each spark plug hole. I do not think the engine...

I may need to shim the upper sterndrive questions.

The lower bearing cup shim is what sets the lower gear. Upper shim just sets the preload which is around 6-8 in“ lbs of rolling torque. If the recess in the cover is still good and the upper bearing cup fits snug then you just need to install the upper shims until the preload is set. Then...

Need Ideas/Advice/Removal of Broken Upper Vertical Shaft Bearing.

I also have a Harbor Freight 20 ton press and it is quite handy as I still like to keep my hands dirty. When I had my shop I had a 80 ton press and this much I can pass on. If the parts have friction welded themselves together it takes a cutting torch or a right angle grinder to separate the parts.

    Carburetor question

You are probably right about the carburetor being re cycled and it has the wrong parts in it. Maybe someone on the site has a extra correct one to sell that is rebuildable.

Need Ideas/Advice/Removal of Broken Upper Vertical Shaft Bearing.

Go to Home Depot or Harbor freight obtain a 4“ or a 4.5” right angle grinder with the abrasive wheels. Start cutting across the bearing, eventually you will be able to peel it off even if it was friction welded. Depending on how bad the shaft surface is you should be able to dress it enough to...

Upper Gear Case Bearing was Destroyed Sterndrive. Need help with part # Merc Alpha One Gen One.

It may be possible that the upper bearing could be friction welded to the stub shaft. While the housing could be salvaged it takes a set of shimming tools along with a hydraulic press. I repaired many like that before the SEI drives became available If the case was not damaged. Your best option...

    74 stringer electric shift rebuild

Did you replace the shift cable wire? Also you need to be sure that a full 12 volts is going to the drive. Use a jumper wire from the battery to the forward “green” wire just to be sure that is not the cause. The only other fluid that OMC approved was automatic transmission fluid if type “C”...

    74 stringer electric shift rebuild

Did you use gear oil made for electric shift lower units? It does however may be the propeller hub. I must congratulate you on your work that you have done so far to the “basket case” and finally got it going.

    Strange engine sound need help

It looks like the pulley on the raw water pump has a build up of rust. That can cause belt failure. It can be cleaned with wire wheel on a drill or take it off then have it glass bead blasted and powder coated.

    Strange engine sound need help

I agree that it appears to be belt related. They are not supposed to walk back and forth in the pulleys. Is that the original belt?

Pressure/Vacuum Test Lower Unit Sterndrive Merc Alpha One Gen One.

The main purpose of the lower seal is to protect the upper seal. Once the lower leaks the lower end of the driven gear will rust which causes the leak. If you can, try to pressure the upper case, I am pretty sure it will not hold pressure. The bottom line is you will have to take the upper...

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

I would only use the genuine Mercruiser seals as replacements. In the past I have removed them very carefully by drilling a small hole and with self tapping screws and patience without damaging the shaft. I later bought the tool.

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

It was a 5 Star tool set made for all the popular propeller shaft sizes. I just found one for $750.00 Needless to say I cannot remember what it cost me many years ago. However it paid for itself at the time. I was always a “special tool freak”. They pay for themselves and do not call in sick!
