In simple terms, if you connect a plain wire across the terminals of a 12V battery, it will get red hot and burn in two. Insert a diode in the wire in a direction that it blocks the flow, then no current flow, no heat, and everything survives. However, if you insert the diode in a direction...

    electrical

In normal operation, the diodes block the battery from discharging through the alternator. Reverse the battery, and current almost free-flows back through the alternator, at a high amperage rate, higher than the diodes can stand, so they burn out.

    RD-15 & RD-21 interchangeability -Part Numbers - tiller handles

Looks like 1956 was mid-year change in the gears. Nevertheless, there were major changes in the steering brackets and mid-section between 1954 and 1955 and again in 1958-59, however the tiller remained the same, except for the gears.

    RD-15 & RD-21 interchangeability -Part Numbers - tiller handles

It would take me a few minutes to find the year. Meanwhile, here is the 1954 parts list

    40 hp Evinrude not "peeing"

If you are confident it is cooling ok, then the hose or fitting must be plugged up. Can you blow back through the hose? The water reaches the pee hose fitting BEFORE going through the powerhead. BTW, just for whatever it's worth, I've preached many times that you cannot test a water pump by...

    1956/57 evinrude sportwin 10

Fuel does not "pull through the carb" as you seem to be suggesting. You fill the carb with fuel with the primer button so the motor will start and run till the carb runs out of fuel. By this time, there should be enough pressure in the tank to keep pushing more fuel to the carb and keep...

    tachometer?

Yes, the rectifier absolutely must be grounded. and the tach won't work if the rectifier is defective. Neither will it charge the battery. There are four diodes in the rectifier and all must be tested in forward and reverse direction (the diodes, that is, not the gearshift). That's eight...

    Primer Bulb Doesn't Pump-up

If it primes the carbs enough to start the motor, that's all that is required. It is my personal observation that lots of those primer bulbs have less-than-perfect check valves and you could pump all day without it getting as firm as you might expect. In fact many of them are so bad that they...

    1979 Evinrude 75HP - Swivel Bracket

Wow, I have never seen such breakage. Are we to assume the transom saver was not in use at the time? I would guess it was backed into something (no transom saver). OR, it suffered a rear end collision on the road. Anyhoo, I don't think you have a 15" bracket.

    1971 Johnson 60esl-71c

9.8 volts????? Where did you measure that? Well whatever the answer, that doesn't sound right to me. Sounds like a dead cell in the battery. Did you have it load tested? I believe it is sparking when you hand trigger it, but the low voltage when cranking is insufficient to power the...

OK, I see it #8 in the parts list, but sorry to say I don't know the answer

    forward controls?

Sure, we know what you are talking about. It's a detent ball. But it would help us if you were to give a clue as to what exactly a 0174229 is. At least a year, or picture or something. Yeah, we could search and hunt, but let's make it easier.

The only difference in the OMC connectors is the hose barb, where the hose slips/clamps on.

    Newbie Fuel line questions

Perhaps you bought a look-alike Yamaha fuel line? As for 5/16 or 3/8, either will work on your small motor. But the big gas guzzlers need the larger 3/8.

    1959 35hp RDS-21 Factory options

Oh come on now. The complete tiller handle assembly was used on a multitude of motors at least up till 1972. It is the little lever on the motor now that also has to be replaced with a model-specific gear and shaft assembly.

    1958 Fastwin Not Getting Fuel

That is a new bowl gasket, so somebody has already been in there. Are you using a pressure tank (original), or has the motor been converted to a fuel pump? One way or the other, those are the ways that gas is fed to the carburetor.
