    198x SS-150 rebuild

So despite being off work this week the weather is holding up progress as I don't have an indoor workspace. I got a bit more paint stripping done on the hull, only two more days before the last of it is gone! I finished the first coat of paint on the trailer frame, and also got the leaf spring...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Flipping is a big step, you'll be painting before long at this rate! I've been working on stripping paint (among trailer work), and it's taken me all summer as I'm only able to get at it a few hours a week and our paint stripper in Canada is not great.

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration By Steve

I'm not great with electrical either, but as I am planning out my runs I use the chart here to calculate required wire gauge: https://www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2020/february/choose-the-correct-wire-size One thing I do remember is that when calculating wire length using...

    StarCraft Holiday

Welcome, nice looking Holiday! What's the plan to power it? A couple of people on this forum have performed what they call a "bow-ectomy", if I remember correctly the front deck is integral to the structure of the boat and you have to compensate if you remove it. Maybe an aluminum frame...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

Ramps around here vary from dirt to concrete, but the rollers have left large dents in the hull so I'm going with bunks. This boat is so light that winching it up shouldn't be too bad.

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

I don't have the awesome Citristrip, but I ended up just doing multiple coats of stripper on my numbers and scraping like crazy with a putty knife. The nylon brush on the drill cleaned up the last bit, but it definitely was the hardest part of paint removal (and that's saying something for me...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

A few days late on this update, but I continue to make slow steady progress, especially because I am off work this week. Spending a lot of time on family activities, but I have been getting a few hours each morning on the boat. At this pace I will win the award for slowest rebuild! I spent...

Transom restoration of aluminum skiff Bayrunner BR-15

Honestly from those pictures it looks like you will either have to cut the caps or remove the storage compartments and pull the wood straight forward to clear the caps. It looks like the two rear sections of the storage are riveted to the other section, you might just be able to remove the top...

New here and questions Starcraft SS 16

I think the SS would be the same as most other aluminums: hull pitting or corrosion, corroded or missing rivet heads, the transom wood should be checked for rot, flex, or softness, if PT wood was used in the boat or for trailer bunks then check for corrosion under that (the PT chemicals react...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration By Steve

I see your bow rib limber hole is blocked by the Starcarft factory red smeg on the bow seam, do you have any ideas how to clear that out for bow drainage? I'm having the same issue and really don't want to take out that rib to clean it.

If you are in Canada then JT's Outdoor Fabrics has reasonable prices on Nautolex.

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

I think the general consensus (depending on time, cost, etc) is that it's best to omit that plywood motor mount anyway, or better yet to use a piece of aluminum (1/4"?) instead, so whether or not you need to cover the existing mount holes it may be something to consider.

    198x SS-150 rebuild

Been a little while, but I have still been busy and I'll have a larger update tonight (preview: unfortunately it's just trailer work), but I have a bit of a break through on my rivet practice! I took another run but this time I cranked the air pressure on both the compressor and at the gun, and...

22' starcraft islander, crack(s) in hull -- aluminum repair options?

I'm just starting my resto and have yet to actually do any riveting, but from what I've read: Forming can be done with a rubber mallet and gentle banging. The hull may need a board or something held on the inside while you wack it to make sure it doesn't bounce or dent. There is a rivet thread...

22' starcraft islander, crack(s) in hull -- aluminum repair options?

I'm a boat new guy, but I have spent years reading the Starcraft restorations on this site. The vast majority of people in there who are patching a crack will drill stop holes at the ends of the cracks to prevent it cracking further, remove the old rivets (if applicable), make and form an...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

Spent a bit (a lot!) of time stripping paint yesterday, and got a few more things taken apart on the trailer. I also went to town and picked up some Tremclad (Rustoleum comparable) flat white paint and red oxide primer for the trailer frame, as well as a wire wheel kit for the angle grinder...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

So I have been working on this boat, although the pace is so slow I feel like I'm not really making much progress. Over the last couple of weeks I got the transom corrosion dremeled out, and there is now two coats of JBWeld Marine filling in all the pitting. Today I got the hull off the...
