    Prop selection 1998 fishin barge

The correct prop is one that let's the engine get in between the max rated rpm for the engine at wot. A wag for that setup would be somewhere between a 7-12 pitch prop depending on the weight of the barge. Leaning towards the lower end of that as a wag.

    Changing Gear Ratio...Prop Change Required

Going from 1.81 to 1.98 GR will require going to a 23P prop to maintain the same rpm as you have with the 1.81 GR. However, if your rpm was on the low side with the 1.81gr, then it might still be within rpm range with the 1.98gr.

    1985 Evinrude 50 - Prop options for a noob...

Before you even start testing props, you need to make sure the engine is mounted at the proper height. Mounted too low and you need less pitch to compensate for the extra drag. Right now you are over reving a little with a 600# load. You will only over rev more with a 400# load. So first check...

If that engine is in fact a 2.42GR the 18p prop should be the right one, or very close to it.

    1985 Evinrude 50 - Prop options for a noob...

Assuming the boat and engine are in good condition, with the engine mounted at the proper height for performance, you should be able to get maybe a little over 30 knots with a minimal load with the 18p prop. This assumes the GR is 2.42 for that engine and boat weight is 850#. Otherwise all bets...

    New Boat

The brand new Lowe boat I bought was not setup or propped for max performance. And they admitted it when I called them. They did pay for having the engine mount height changed. But as for the prop, that was on me. After my experience with this, i started looking at new boats from different...

    New Boat

Tach may indeed be off, but don't forget he has a CT engine which has a 2.33 GR. Merc prop selector suggest anywhere from a 16p prop for light load to a 13p prop for a max load.

    New Boat

I didn't know efi engines had carbs. I can't find them on my 2017 60hp efi 4S. maybe that's because they don't have carbs. And if his engine is mounted flush with the transom top, it's definitely mounted too low by at least 3 inches.

    New Boat

Basically, you're screwed. That boat should never be sold with anything less than a 75hp engine, especially for use at 3700'. You are way under powereed and there's nothing you can do to increase the power on that engine. At least with a 75hp you could remove the air restricter to make up for...

93’ Bass Tracker 40hp Prop Suggestions?

If you're maxing out rpm at wot you do not want to drop the pitch. That would put you above max rpm. Make sure your engine is at it's lowest trim before taking off.

93’ Bass Tracker 40hp Prop Suggestions?

What's the gear ratio for that engine. if it's the same as a 40 hp Johnson, then it should be 2.42. And at 5500 rpm you should be doing about 30 mph at 10% slip at wot. Personally i like ss props because they don't damage as easily as aluminum and i fish the woods.

93’ Bass Tracker 40hp Prop Suggestions?

yes, the trim tab is to compensate for prop rotation trying to turn the engine one way or the other mostly during acceleration. As for lowering pitch going to a 4 blade, you are correct. But you're running at max rpm now, so going to a 4 blade at same pitch shouldn't be a problem to lower max...

93’ Bass Tracker 40hp Prop Suggestions?

First thing I'd do is set the trim tab back straight. It appears to be way off to one side at aboiut a 45 degree angle. that's going to rob you of a lot of power And you are under powered to begin with. might then try a 4 blade prop, same pitch.

    max Horsepower rating

Yes, it's illegal to exceed max hp. My question is which. Gov. regulations or boat makers recommend max.Unfortunately, the gov reg only defines the max. That leaves it open to manufacturers to set any rating they want. Many of which imo are set low to upsell to a more expensive boat. My boat...

    max Horsepower rating

I'm not asking anyone to advocate over powering, just what's legal. As for insurance. I hate all insurances. IMO, it's legalized extortion when it comes to auto insurance. And if you think insurance will protect you, better think again. It's has limited payout. You will still be responsible for...

    max Horsepower rating

Or I could just put a 75 hp on it. remove the intake air restrictor and reprogram the ecm to get 115 hp out of the 75 and no one would be the wiser. But that's not the purpose of my inquiry.
  19. WesNewell

    max Horsepower rating

I don't carry insurance, so I'm not worried about that. the boat is rated for 75 hp. The 75, 90, and 115 hp engines all weigh the same and use the same 2.1 L block, so there's absolutely no reason to limit the HP to 75. No one is going to convince me that's it's because the boat can't handle it...

    max Horsepower rating

Actually, it's not. It's only for boats under 20'.and there are 4 formulas for computing hp depending on size and type. And there are major differences in the type. For instance a boat of my size could have 3 different ratings depending on type. 50hp, 80hp, and 175hp. A boat of my type falls...
