    Engine support while towing.

I wouldnt think so. An outboard is a LOT of weight that can produce a lot of movement on perhaps the most critical part of the boats support. Transom savers are named such for a reason. Are they perfect.... no. Can they potentially cause more harm than good..... Maybe..... are they better than...

HELP: Rusted bolts on leaf springs

thats what it sounded like to me as well.... not uncommon on older cars for the same thing to happen. The nut comes off, but the shank of the bolt is a permanent part of the bushing due to rust. You can try greasing the bolt, but its not always effective, and you end up cutting the bolts out and...

    Engine support while towing.

when I had an outboard, I used a transom saver. I just didnt like the idea of the heavy motor being able to move around even a little bit, and transferring those loads (even an old Evinrude 115 isnt light) to the transom. Now that I have an IO, I just put a block on the trim rams to keep the...

    Mercruiser 898 cooling issue

thats what I was going to say. The hose doesnt provide as much water usually as the lake does, and if there is any "out of level" condition one side will run warmer. 170-180 on a hose would not concern me, but I also would not run it for a LONG time, as the exhaust is running warmer and less...

High compression in 1 cylinder - 7.4 carb

if thats the case, I would just source them locally if it were me. Rock Auto has good prices on the parts, but you eat it up in shipping..... unless you have a sizeable order, and even then sometimes its not worth it. Same with the lifters, and possibly the cam, depending on spec and availability.

High compression in 1 cylinder - 7.4 carb

True, I wasnt thinking that you need marine intake gaskets.... most any NAPA should have a set of gaskets for a Chevy Rat motor..... marine not so much though

High compression in 1 cylinder - 7.4 carb

you will need new gaskets..... Honestly, I wouldnt worry about purchasing gaskets until you find out the full scope of work. if you need a cam, you are a lot deeper in the parts bin than just intake gaskets.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

yep, its getting on towards the end of the season in many areas, and those "marginal" boats are gonna be showing up on Craigslist for $300-$800. get one with a janky hull, and a good engine, strip it for any parts you need, and take the rest to the dump. Sell the trailer to help offset the...

    Mercruiser not shifting right

thats where I would be starting from....

Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

ok. We have found the proverbial smoking gun. The shift interrupt should not be moving at all during shifting INTO gear, nor on land. Its only purpose is to momentarily shut off the ignition so the drive comes out of gear. The way the dogs are cut, they pull into each other under load, and...

Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

there are only so many points of contact in the system. If the drive goes into reverse when you manually move the shift linkage, its not inside the drive. If the intermediate shaft is not SLOPPY loose on the splines going into the lower, it likely isnt your issue either. This leaves the linkage...

Water pouring from harmonic balancer area on muffs

so, it was green coolant that was leaking on muffs, and not raw water? not to get too specific, but these are two different and separated systems that only come into contact through the heat exchanger. Unless someone put fresh water in the closed system it should have your normal "green"...

    MC-1 Cylinder Rebuild Questions

some of the o-rings arent o-rings per se, but are quad seals, where they have almost a square profile with rounded edges. a hydraulic shop may be able to assist you, but these rams are pretty small and specific in their usage. If they have the right sizes, they will have the compatible materials...

Water pouring from harmonic balancer area on muffs

ok, not real up on the 488 motors, but this sticks out from what I do know..... first off, you have fresh water leaking on muffs. The 488 is a closed system, so its something on the raw water side. By definition, it cannot be the block or the engine, however it CAN be a hose, pump connection...

Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

ok, I think I know what the issue is.... I did something similar last year when I reassembled my drive (1980 vintage Mercruiser) only mine I couldnt get out of forward..... check this thread out, specifically post #4...

Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

you may have something out of place where the cable interacts with the bellcrank. Very easy for that to fall out of place when re-installing the drive. If it isnt that, your lower cable may have packed it in and need replacement.

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

I have to agree it comes down to QC, regardless of the country of origin or the manufacturer. The thing is, some countries are known for their "dubious quality" knockoffs and this overshadows the actual quality parts that they can produce. As with most things, it comes down to money. Buy cheap...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yours isnt much crustier looking than mine..... I need to repaint it at some point, 43 years of AZ sun hasnt been kind to the paint. No corrosion, as its freshwater, but with the rest of the hull painted, it looks terrible on the back.....

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yeah, I need one of them!!!!!! just under $300 now, but damn, for what a shop charges, it pays for itself in one go..... not to mention you cant drop the damn thing and chances of screwing up critical parts goes to about nil....

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yeah, I fought mine for about an hour. I need to break down and get a small cherry picker for the drive. Its an MC-1 so it has the eye on it for a lift..... trying to juggle the shaft into the gimbal, make sure the prop doesnt pop out of gear, ensure the damn water o-ring stays in place, and...
