1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Let me preface this by saying that my only experience is what you've read in my thread. But you're a smart guy, and you've done your homework, so I will share my thoughts. Transom will depend on how flat the wood fits to the hull. If it is flat, and won't have any dips or gouges in it, you...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I used a Harbor Freight Belt sander with 36 grit belts. Quick, flat, and MUCH less flying dust. Especially if you tape a length of vacuum cleaner hose to the port where the dust bag is supposed to go. It will blow the dust right through the hose. Toss the hose end out through the keyhole and...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I didn't want to dedicate a particular amount of resin to finish-coating only. I finished most of mine with waxed gelcoat, but later learned that gelcoat needs a good bit more hardener to make it kick. Some of mine stayed sticky until I brushed some release on it.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Just in case nobody mentioned it, you want laminating (unwaxed) resin. No need to sand and acetone between applications because the surface stays sticky until you seal it so that the air can't get to it. Doesn't matter if it just cured, or if it's been weeks. Fresh resin reactivates the...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

My latest accomplishment was to finish the second seat and get it ready to mount. Photos of all the steps. Found a penny...I think it's a penny. LOL At least I had supervision on this part of the project. Pretty much snapped all of the old upholstery off, it was so brittle. Wood was long...

They have a new site, in case you are not aware: https://www.caravellefans.com/ I hope it's OK to post that link. It is not a competing vendor. Just a brand-specific site.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I cut down one of my seat posts to the correct height, and set the assembly in the boat for a test fit. Or should I say "test SIT" I wish they could be taller for the sake of getting in and out of them, but I have to be properly positioned to reach the controls and see through the windshield...

I haven't ruled out wood wrapped in vinyl. Just exploring possibilities while I have time. I like the doghouse for the sake of engine access. Besides, none of us are sunbathers.

The 1750 was also offered with a doghouse and a seat on each side. The seats could be folded inside out (for lack of a better term) to fill in and create the sun deck. Since It will mainly be my arthritic wife and I in this boat, I plan to go with a doghouse that will flare out to cover the...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I could mark the screw holes on the carpet, and then cut away the carpet where the screws will be so I can pre-drill and apply a small bed of sealant for each screw. I'm picturing a round piece of carpet about a half inch smaller diameter than the pedestal base.

My main concern is about sealing. I don't want water to get under there and rot the screw holes. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I have yet to strip and clean the second seat, but I went ahead and made all of the upholstery for it. This one waves in the opposite direction. My original plan for the steering wheel was to wrap the Teleflex wheel that I already had, but at best that would leave me with a nicely wrapped wheel...

Hoping for more thoughts on trash receptacles. One more question: Glue down the carpet and THEN screw the seat pedestals in place, or screw the pedestals in place and cut the carpet around the pedestals?

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Random thought: The Coast Guard requires that I have a trash recepticle on board. This is a small ski boat. Maybe I can build something in while I am in this phase of construction. Any ideas? What do you guys use?

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I've been thinking about how I want to build the fiberglass engine enclosure. I want to make it slick-finished glass like it came out of a factory mold, but I want to shortcut the process by skipping the plug stage. I just want to build a single-use mold with a smooth-surface material...

One seat is done. The other should be a snap because the patterns are made, and most of the parts are marked out, if not cut and sewn already. I reupholstered the seats in my truck five years ago with good success, but I have to say that covering these glorified plastic buckets is more...

    How many gallons of resin?

I did a 17' ski boat complete with 12 gallons. I took the time to hard roller the air out and keep the layers compressed as I wetted it out. Lighter and stronger if you put in the effort. If you just saturate it, you will need a good bit more. Floor alone will take 3 to 4 gallons with the...

165 L6's out of the bertram. What do they need?

While you are resealing the engines, consider replacing the rear main seal and the front crank seal in the timing cover. Especially since you plan to reseal the oil pans. The differences that I have seen in marine grade parts is that they are either sealed, or as in the case of alternators...
