    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

It was a good season for us, Jim. We got out almost every weekend from April - September. I had a rocky start with 3 break downs requiring a rescue, but adding the fuel pressure regulator has made my boat run like a top. Glad to hears yours is running better!

    1957 Canadian Challenger rebuild

Looks great. First rebuild or have you played with wood boats before?

1993 Baja 24 outlaw stringer question

Try to at least get the profile of the stringers somewhat close to the hulls shape. Shim it up off the hull about 1/4", then completely fill the gap with PB.

Best value pre-made fiberglass filler alternative to making Fiberglass PB

That pic was for fiberglass grinding dust containment, not cabosil mixing. 😂 Good luck in whatever direction you decide to go.

1993 Baja 24 outlaw stringer question

Cost, availability, and plenty strong enough

1993 Baja 24 outlaw stringer question

I would personally use exterior grade ACX plywood and not dimensional lumber or marine plywood.

Best value pre-made fiberglass filler alternative to making Fiberglass PB

Gotta build an airtight containment tent if you're gonna do it in the garage. But I digress... How about the Total Boat Structural Repair Putty for pre-mixed?

Best value pre-made fiberglass filler alternative to making Fiberglass PB

Does your fear of cabosil come from experience, or just what you've read? Speaking from experience, it's not that bad if you're careful. Wear a respirator and gloves (you'll already be doing this for the vapors). I preferred mixing in my MEKP to my resin first, then adding cabosil in a few...

    Steering pin replacement

Definitely time for a new pin. Agree with above...spring for the SS one.

97 Sunbird Spirit 150 Hull Repair

Not sure on the first question, though I'd probably want to check and make sure steering isn't out of adjustment before adding a guard. For the second question, if all you're going to do is tie fenders...sure. But you know if you put a cleat there, it'll eventually get used for tying up the...

    1986 Invader v210 help

"Inheriting" and "acquiring" boats is expensive! Agree with the others - it's a full gut and restore. Replace transom, stringers, and bulkheads. In that first picture, is it a layer of plywood on top of each other? If so, that's a deck-over, which means someone band-aided it in the past...

    Fiberglass resin question

Ouch on that price. If you have to buy more wood, save your money and just buy exterior grade ACX radiata pine plywood.

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Don't buy finishing resin. Just buy laminating resin and a small container of wax and make your own finishing resin when you need it. I bought 50 yd of 1708 and 50 yd of CSM. I used about 30-35 yd of the 1708 and about 20 yd of the CSM on my 19 ft boat. You will end up needing more than 10...

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

I think cheaper boats used chopper guns, and nicer ones were marketed as "hand laid". Unfortunately on mine (1987), some of the hand laid glass was sloppily done, and none of the stringers had glass all the way up the sides.

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Typically if you leave the outer skin on the boat, proper transom thickness is achieved with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood and about 2-3 layers of 1708 fiberglass...maybe a couple more depending on how your specific rebuild goes.

    Bayliner Capri 2150 resurrection.

If you plan on keeping the QJ, I highly recommend getting Cliff Ruggles' book and Doug Roe's book. And you are right, there is only one bowl, but there are secondary wells that are fed from the bowl through two tiny holes, which can get clogged.

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

I splashed at the end of 2022, and we are reaping the benefits of a fully restored boat now! It was a LOT of work, but the results have been worth it.

    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

Being done with grinding is a huge milestone. Yes, 2 layers of 1700 should be fine for the mounts. Perpendicular with 1700 shouldn't matter, as it's a 45 degree bias. The stitching runs the direction of the roll and will impact how it lays around bends, but once cured in resin, it carries almost...

    Bayliner engine swap??

Meh, my thru-hull exhaust doesn't bother me or any of my passengers at all, and I've never gotten any dirty looks. I am running the OEM mufflers that go between the elbow and transom, though.
