    Block serial number

I have what I thought was a mercury 400 according to the listed serial number. The serial number on the block is 1426900 no idea what year or model the block is? Any ideas? The serial number says it is not a 400 block but can not confirm what block it is?

    MN DNR boat landing inspectors.

Evidently randomly it seems the MN DNR has people at boat landings to inspect boats. I encountered an inspector at the boat landing yesterday morning. I was putting the boat in for a short test cruise to check some carb work. I don't linger or screw around when I go to launch the boat I get...

I am sure it was funny to watch.

So after a stressful week at work my wife suggested we go boating last night. We went to a close lake and were on the water in 15 minutes. It was a beautiful evening and the old mercury 400 was running great. Was running down the lake when I heard a pop, little concerning but I looked back at...

    Prop torque

When I bought my Alumacraft Deep C it had a mid 60's Mercury 350 35hp motor, the prop torque was evident. I repowered with a Mercury 400 45hp and there is no evident prop torque. Is it possible that with the 45hp motor it gets up higher on plane thus somehow eliminating the torque? Both motors...

Thinking about buying a wood boat.

So there is a Thompson Thomboy for sale on line. I am seriously considering buying it but I am jaded enough to be logical what are the trouble spots I should look for as far as structurally with the boat. Any concerns about this model it is a 1964 model.

    Pellet gun

I received a gift cert for christmas couldn't figure out anything I needed so I picked up a Gammo Tac Whisper pellet gun. WOW they are nothing like the old crossman pump pellet guns of my youth. 1250 fps and dang near blow thru 1/2" plywood, and it is quiet. What a new fun toy, look out yard pests.

Restoring a boat with the intention of selling it.

I found a 1957 Starcraft Speed Queen on crags list last summer for $250. When I bought it I planned on making it a winter project and intend to sell it in the spring. I know there is not the possibility of making a big return on the investment of the time and $ spent. I am wondering if there are...

Getting a vintage tin boat appraised and insured.

I have a 1954 Alumacraft Deep C with a 1960 Mercury 400 on the back. Is it worth getting it appraised and insured as a collectable? I know the boat is only worth what somebody is willing to pay and old tin boats do not have the desireability of other vintage boats but I know that if I were to...

    1960 mercury 400 4 cylinder

I have been searching online diagrams with no luck to even find the part number of the part I need. I am looking for the grommet that goes in the lower unit that seals the copper water line into the lower unit. I have had no luck finding the diagram that calls out the part number.

Back Flushing from the tell tail on a 1960 Merc 400

I have had the motor out a few times and I am a little concerned about the stream coming out of the tell tale seems more like a mist than a stream. I am thinking of connecting a hose to the tell tale to flush water to the inlet line out of the water pump housing. I have the lower unit off and...

    What a motor.

I have a 1963 3HP Johnson that has sat in storage for 16 years. It was simply shut off the last time it was used no fogging no prep. I took it out yesterday and dumped the old gas out of the tank, I dumped an additive into the tank (one of those products that is ripped on by the puritans here)...

    !961 Mercury 400 Issue

So I attempted to do a sea trial with the boat but never left the dock. The motor would start and idle, a little bit of a high idle but it ran. The problem is when I tried to put the motor in gear it would die, the motor would restart easily. While I wait for the new fuel pump parts and carb...

    Cable steering, Why?

I mounted a motor this past week on a boat I am restoring. I finally connected the cables to the motor and the motor turns to the right but binds steering to the left. I must have crossed a cable on the steering drum when I put the cables back in place. My question is why do they have a few...

Step and trim trim tab location

Finally got the motor back and mounted so it is time to mount the trim tabs, couple questions about proper placement. Looking that the back of the boat what is the best location? The pitot tube on the back kinda complicates it.
