Why I'm nervous boating at night...

In 76 I hit a Pole Floating in the Water, at about 30mph.

Guess Who needed a tow home ?

The Retardation of the Spark Timing is what set the Idle Speed, there is no Spec, at it will vary depending on the Load the Engine is subject to. Which means a change in Prop Pitch will result in a different Idle Speed and an Adjusted will likely be needed. OMC Engines in that HP Range were easy...

Yamaha 130 v4 idle mix screws

An adjustable Air Bleed is all it is. It is unlike an Idle Speed Control, though I'm sure it has been misadjusted to achieve that Purpose

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

I've driven beside many Pelicans, it is Impressive when they trade Speed for Altitude. Hell of a Wingspan, on those Buzzards Took this about 20 yrs ago, not flying just paddling away from me This was about 45 minutes from home. Didn't take this Pic

Guess Who needed a tow home ?

In 86 few if any 30hp engines had Power Tilt, though it was offered as a Dealer installed Accessory. Power Trim wasn't offered for it

    Prop, or Engine Issue?

Another Compression Gauge might yield/provide better info. As stated Prior, those Numbers are slightly over 50% of what would be expected.... Careful about a another Thread, as running 2 Open Threads by the same Person about the same Motor, can get complicated to follow...

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

600 rpm, give or take 50 rpm. I like to go as low as practical, as it is easier on the Shift Mechanism, which is either In or Out of Gear, no slip Clutch to ease in

Installing Power Trim or Tilt would have a few Benefits. Replacing and/or Repairing a few Props a couple of times, and overall Costs are Similar

    WATER JACKET/HEAD GASKET 1987 25 HP 2 STROKE MERCURY

Quite low. As the numbers are Similar, You might want to try another Compression Gauge. When doing the Test, keep pulling until the Gauge reads no higher. Might take 3 or 4 pulls, might take 8 or 9... If the Rings are Stuck a bit of Combustion Chamber Cleaner overnight might help. I had...

Prop questions on a 16' 1976 StarCraft Montego (Merc 888)

With a Recommended Top Rpm of 4200, a 302 is not going to need much for Carburation, a very small 4bbl, like a 390 cfm would be overkill 302 cu in at 4200 rpm can inhale 367 CFM, at 100% Volumetric Efficiency, However an engine from that Era, would at best have, 75% VE, so it would inhale 275 CFM.

Prop questions on a 16' 1976 StarCraft Montego (Merc 888)

351 Heads on a 302 actually raising Compression sounds like a long shot, the Combustion Chamber is Larger and will drop the Compression from 8:1 to less than 7:1, unless some Machining and/or Parts changes also happened. As for the Cam, is it a Marine Grind, or some Street Auto/Truck Grind?

    WATER JACKET/HEAD GASKET 1987 25 HP 2 STROKE MERCURY

The Water Jacket Covers on a lot of Mercurys will leak around the Spark Plugs, and yes it can happen because the Engine was starved of water, and the Cover would distort, and the Gasket would shift/tear. Happened a Few Times on my inline 6, After the 3 time, the Dealer GAVE me a New Jacket...
