    That was a motor I never questioned my mechanic on, I had bought a 40 classic with oil injection, so our discussion was primarily smaller motors. I made the assumption the great reputation was for all Merc outboards. Just goes to show...never assume !!

    Try adding a squeeze ball in the fuel line like they use on outboard motors. When it acts up, check the ball, if not collapsed pumpnit and see ir the engine comes back to life. If it does, you have a pickup or pump issue.
