Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@Lou C yeah... I guess saying it has "brakes" was a bit of an overstatement. It has brake drums that are pretty incredibly rusted out, but they're not hooked up to anything, so I have no idea whether they were hydro or electric at one point!

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 Yes, the trailer has 4 pins right now, but it also has brakes, and no surge coupler, so... I'm not sure what's going on there, ha. I'm mostly trying to figure out the cheapest way to get brakes on there—I really do drive 90 seconds to the ramp and nowhere else. Happy to run wiring or...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

oh, alternatively... is there a good marketplace for user trailers? I don't know of any, and craigslist is not being particularly useful... not a lot of trailers for 22 footers if you're not in Florida, apparently :)

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

I see, thank you all. I don't have a surge coupler but guess I'll put one on since I only have a 4 pin. I think my plan for now is to rebuild the axles (if necessary), leaf springs, hubs, etc. and just make sure my hubs are brake hubs. And then keep my eyes open for a used surge coupler in the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

oh.... yeah I guess I need brakes. Two questions: One, my boat is stored—literally—about a block from the launch ramp. I'm kind of guessing because there aren't city blocks in the park, but it's about a 90 second drive with a 10mph speed limit. Still worth it to get brakes? And then two: If...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Thanks—another question. If I end up using my existing axle, at the moment, I have (very rusted) brake hubs on there. What are the considerations when buying new hubs? Do I need to buy brake hubs, or can I just buy a simple hub? If I need brake hubs, is it just a matter of buying any brake...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

great, thanks @dingbat! I think I'll hammer test the frame and axle and assuming everything sounds good, just replace the hubs and springs (and just use my existing axle and frame). Just to make sure this doesn't get buried... I'm having a bit of a tough time finding a replacement axle. My...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@dingbat thanks. Just to make sure I'm understanding, hot dipped means that it's probably pretty rust resistant, correct? So you're saying that if I tap on it pretty thoroughly and it sounds like metal, it's probably in good shape? What will it sound like if it's no good, will it just sound...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 that makes sense! Is there any way to find out whether it was hot dipped and/or how much rust is on the inside? This boat is a 22-footer, so used trailers are few and far between, and new trailers are thousands of dollars. If my trailer body is in decent shape, and I can replace the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 I don't have any kind of serial number, unfortunately... trailer did not come with any kind of paperwork or anything. But on the trailer, it's galvanized and the trailer BODY looks pretty good. There's a little bit of surface rust but it seems like the body is in good shape. The...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Found an empty plate on the inside of a crossbar... looks like it's a Calkins trailer? Also took some measurements of the axles & etc. My understanding is that if I buy a new axle and leaf springs, and the axle has the hub and everything on it, I can just bolt in the leaf springs, bolt the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@Chris1956 Thanks. I have no idea what brand it is, I can't find a plate or vin or anything on it. Is there some place where this information would typically be, or some hidden place where manufacturers are required to stamp info as a backup or something? Thanks!

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

ah, so... turns out I was very wrong about the leaf springs. They're there, just VERY rusted to the point that I couldn't see them without a flashlight. so those will get replaced. At this point, my strategy is to jack the trailer up and take off one wheel, pull the hubs/etc and get everything...

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

Just a high-level question: I've heard really good things about porta potties that use that biodegrading liquid stuff in the tank. I can imagine that it's pretty awful to clean out just a straight tank of whatever gets flushed, but if there's some liquid and chemicals that are designed to break...

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

@tpenfield yep, that's exactly what I was describing. Was your under the very bow cushion, or under one of the longer port/starboard cushions? If it was under the very bow cushion, what porta potty was it that fit under there? Thanks all!

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

Hi all, I have an older ('66) islander 22 and I'm looking to add a small emergency toilet on board. Plan B is to just get a porta potty and keep it on board somewhere, and that's totally a fine way to go. But I'm also realizing that I have a really nice, mostly empty storage area up in the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 ok, I think I see your point. If I'm understanding correctly, you are suggesting that I just pull the hubs off the existing axle and install new hubs? That's totally fair, I'm not sure why I didn't think of that. So then, I'll ask my same question but about hubs: What considerations...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Hello all, I think it's time for me to replace my trailer axles. My bearings/hubs are pretty rusted and now that both my tires have gone flat, this might be the motivation I need to replace the whole axle assembly. Just to make sure I'm doing things right... what are the considerations that I...

Mercruiser MC-1 Hydraulic Ram Hose Leaking

@alldodge you were right, no idea how I didn't notice this before. Thanks! @jhamblett really appreciate the photo, that helped a ton. Thanks both! EDIT: One more question. When replacing the hose, are all alpha hoses basically the same or do I need some specific prealpha hose? Thanks!
