Good advice. I plan on using that method.....throw the IR gun away!

It will rev fine in the drive with a week spark....hence the jump test. Your probably right, something else. Best of luck

Jump test is done at home. Outboards are set up to run under load, they all run good in the driveway. All the problems arise when you stick them in the water. You sound frustrated....might want to take a brake.

Did you try pulling one spark plug wire while it was running? If you pull one and it dies that means that's a good cylinder but the other one wouldn't hold up so the other one's junk. If you pull one and it stays running then you most likely have the bad one. So it could be the coil or it could...

Not exactly sure but at least 3/8 and should be a nice blue spark.

Sorry, wrong link. Older motor but might still have good information.

Remove the nut then you will need a puller. I use an old steering wheel puller and three 1/4 inch screws. Don't be afraid to hit the top of the puller to get it to release.

Have you pulled the flywheel? If so besides looking at the key you could see if the plate is not moving back all the way. More pictures of all sides of the motor might help to see why this is not working per factory specs.

1977 35 HP, going from key to start button/kill lanyard

On mine it breaks the power pack ground but I believe you can break both coil grounds to do the same thing.

Perhaps the needles where screwed in to far and they were flattened. Not sure if you can see this but there are other adjustments. Did you loosen the screw on the carb just below the idle circuit? https://photos.app.goo.gl/Y9yyKvmzzszXxo8a6

This particular carb has a primer nipple on top and no draw tube inside the carb....either way fuel going up through the carb is different than I'm used to. Setting are out of spec so something is wrong here.

Johnson 40hp 2005 link and idle adjustments

Well unless race is about to elaborate more, the carb forms a venture and by letting in more air more fuel is drawn, in this case, to the idle circuit which yes is located on the top of the carb appears to pull from the primer. Not as familiar with these carbs.

    96 Evinrude 50 Cutting Out

Some motors have the two wire overheat sensor and the diode in the harness goes out putting it in to limp mode or low RPMs. Your model doesn't have that sensor but someone could have changed it I guess. Easy to confirm, on the head is a sensor with a tan wire coming out of it, if it has a...

Johnson 40hp 2005 link and idle adjustments

By spinning the idle circuit clockwise it's more lean, by unscrewing it....it makes it more rich, so not sure what your talking about.
