anytime! Indeed stress cracks will be addressed when putting it back together. dug out the two layers of very wet and heavy plywood. they did come out in relatively solid pieces so I at least have a template. Interesting how the used pvc tubing to run the nav light wires. once wood was removed...

Update 11-19 With temps too low, not much fiberglassing could be done. The next best thing was to tackle to bow pulpit. It was delaminating and needed attention. Removed it from the boat. Drilled out all rivets. Removed the aluminum trim. It was heavy! At least 50 lbs. Started by removing the...

A little 3/4 round bit with the router made it easy. I was really surprised how easy it wetted out and rolled on around the corners. Had to baby sit it a little but there’s no air bubbles at all. I did sand and add more thickened epoxy to the edges before laying in the tabbing. those pieces went...

Took advantage of warm weather here in the northeast and tried my first attempt at tabbing. Must say went better than expected. Did some tests first since Im using 1700 and epoxy resin. Wasn’t sure how much was needed to completely soak the cloth. Was much less than anticipated.

looking good. Sweat equity paying off. If you intend to remove the blue and red pistriping I used heat gun ( not on full) and flat blade. Made it easy! I used this soy based stripper with great success.

Definitely will completely fill that area. Will put pvc tubing in up against existing garboard drain and Fill in the entire cavity. Any suggestions on tabbing in the transom with 8/9” strips of 1700 around the edges before going over the entire transom with 2 layers of 1700? can I do a wet on...

Update 10-22 Removed the clamps from the transom. Seems like he bond was good and even. Using the outside plate helped keep things square and even. straight edge was very close to flat… maybe a 16th of an inch out. today the temp allowed me to attempt my first fillet around the new transom...

Nice on he hatch and side windows. looking good. something about fabricating stuff is so rewarding. I felt the same way when I did my side windows. All shiny and new. Then I realized I’m gonna have to wet sand compound and polish the hull at some point. Will you cover the windows when you do yours?

Update 10-9 Last week did some testing with epoxy. Mixed up different batches with cabosil and made some test bonds with scrap wood. Learned quite a bit. Working time to thickening. This past weekend the grinding continues. Found some voids in the transom and filled with thickened epoxy. Gave a...

    Setting transom with epoxy

Thanks All! Great information and advise as usual from everyone. Here is my dilemma… And I know this has been discussed and is probably going to create a ton adversity. Epoxy vs polyester to bond the transom. Pros and cons. epoxy- better bonding strength. So say all the research ive done. But...

    Setting transom with epoxy

Thanks woodonglass… I’ve see this before. However I’ve got an I/0. Was hoping to get insight on how much clamping is needed. All west system stuff recommends minimal clamping as to not push epoxy out too much out creating voids. I’ve got some irregularities on the transom due to wonderful...

    Setting transom with epoxy

Okay… question regarding setting the transom in with the west system epoxy. This is for a small transom section on a 1990 Bayliner 2651. It’s not a the entire transom that’s being refitted. Just the middle section. Approx 24 “ x 27”. Here’s what being replaced. after reviewing all options I’ve...

Update 9-25 the grinding continues… who knew that snow angles can be seen in Sept. I see now why those that have done it previously hate the job… progress slow but sure

Gelcoat/Paint comes off to the touch

Compounding the gelcoat…. Then waxing the gelcoat will help restore the boat. I think you’re talking about oxidation of your 30 year old boat. there are many posts on the forum relating the “how to“ on this process.

Using warped plywood for bench seats

you could screw it to a straight board on one side… glass the opposite…once cured do the other side. Just a thought. Since you have a template you could just get new plywood… might me less time consuming.

Yep the purple stuff will be used for sure. Update 9-18 was finally able to get some exterior grade plywood for the transom. seems the big box stores aren't carrying much stock these days. Also able to purchase some linear Doug fur for the motor mount stringers. made a template for the transom...
