1980 Evinrude 70hp Coil question, leaking clear/brown goo

Yes, melting coils is an indication but you need to determine if your engine is running hot. Buy an IR gun and test head temperature.

    issues with 89 30hp Evinrude

Here's my 1985 right after I put a new fuel pump in it ...there's a service bulletin on my year to run the timing up 1/4 to 1/2 past the marks before the carbs open when doing the linc and sync....used to cough at going from idle to wot.

    issues with 89 30hp Evinrude

Just because it pumps water doesn't mean it's flowing around the engine. Sounds like an overheat...do not run this motor until you find out what's wrong. These are easy motors to work on.

Ran in salt or fresh water? Did you check head temperature with an IR gun?

    Yamaha 50

On the 40 I think it's an 87 or 84... L being the model year designation. The 50 must be a TLHU but I'm trying to get that verified....which I think equates to a 1996

No it's not. The 2 pictures above are from one motor. Port and starboard side.

    Yamaha 50

Trying to verify years here..... Not sure why Yamaha makes it so tough. The 50 HP on the tag says 6h5L590258. 50ILHU and he was told 1996 The 40 has these tags and he thought it was an 1994. Looks like a 1984 to me, anyone know?

    Yamaha 50

Got a call from a friend last night and he has a 1996 Yamaha 50 HP 2 stroke with a bum gearcase. (50ilhu) he picked up this 1994 40 HP and wants me to help with swap over the lower unit. Anyone know if these two motors aren't compatible? Let me know. Thanks, Matt

    Wont start. '89 evinrude 70hp

Well you now know you at least have a bad plug wire. You will need a multi meter and one of these inexpensive spark jump testers.

Please help, no spark and so lost

Possibly your new parts are defective and a broken wire can be time consuming to find. Take a break and when your tester arrives trouble shoot from the top until you find the culprit.

Evinrude 9.5 vs 8hp speed test

We raced the Evinrude 9.9 against their 9.8 on water skimmers and they always won...then my uncle showed us that the 15 cowl would fit on the 9.9 motor. They could never figure out how we could beat them!

Evinrude 9.5 vs 8hp speed test

Yes, they put performed them in performance unless you couldn't get them to start! Just saying.

1971 Evinrude fisherman, not pumping water

Try unscrewing the threaded barbed adapter off the block for the pea tube and see if water blasts through there, otherwise remove thermo and then water jackets and head if needed. You could be plugged up.

Temperature alarm goes off as soon as you turn on the ignition.

Assuming you still have your bro you might want to bleed out your oil lines coming from the tank.

You can clean it in place if it doesn't want to come out....carb spray cleaner and I use torch tip cleaners. Also, get a small spray bottle with 50 to 1 in it and when it begins to die squirt a little into the carb.
