Who makes covers that are any good?

Around here a person can buy a used carport cheaper than having a boat cover made. I paid $500 for a good 12x30 that has ten feet of it enclosed. I don’t remember what the quote was for a 22’ pontoon cover but the replacement Bimini canvas was $800 (4 bow).

    Best flooring options?

The EVA foam looks like the flooring that came on the new Sea Rays at work. It must be tasty because the birds sure like it. Same birds have started digging at upholstery seams to get at the foam underneath.

    Cars you should have kept.

I had a Scout attempt to pull out my 74 Cherokee when I drove it into a wash. I was sober, alone and on an Arizona desert road many miles from town. Went over a rise while turning and stopped when the grill hit the opposite bank. Middle of the day but couldn’t see the hole past the hood. The...

    SX-M repainting tips needed

It is only hazardous if you let it be hazardous. The heavy chem gloves to keep it off your hands, respirator with correct filter to keep it out of your lungs and goggles to keep it out of your eyes. Long sleeves and pants with proper footwear is good too.

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

Skin requirements on an airliner are a little different than on a small general aviation airplane. Some new production aircraft are still using Dacron fabric. Many vintage aircraft came from the factory with cotton skin. 2024 aluminum is what I see most for stressed skin. 3003 is more for low...

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

“ You have that backwards The 5XXX series aluminum are “gummy” (soft and bendable) compared to 7075 “aircraft”, or any of the 2XXX series aluminums for that matter, that are much “tougher” (74-78 Ksi).” Primary aircraft structure isn’t the only thing that gets holes drilled into it. Try...

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

I have seen brad point drill bits but I had only seen them advertised for cutting wood until today. I just checked the aviation tool suppliers I usually do business with and they have them listed for drilling composites. I have drilled and watched a lot of holes being drilled in aluminum sheet...

    Best flooring options?

My first couple of fishing boats had carpet. The one I own now has vinyl. I don’t think I would buy another fishing boat that has carpet. Some of the boats at work (rental type abuse) have carpet. They look like crap compared to the vinyl floors that are the same age and/or number of hours. I...

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

I had to look it up. General purpose drill bits like most of us have laying around are 118 degrees. The angle will likely be 135 degrees if you drill a lot of steel. The bits for cutting plexiglass are 90 degrees. I haven’t tried it on fiberglass or gelcoat but it makes a huge difference...

Has anyone ever tried the drill bits for putting holes in plexiglass and the like?

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

The last I heard it was a $10,000 fine for a shop that was caught removing a DEF system. Might be kind of hard finding one to do it. I own a saws-all and a welder but the computer must be dealt with too. Person to person sell nets more money anyway. Having the DEF system deleted would increase...

Spark plugs and cap replacement interval

Electricity isn’t the only concern with rings. I went ringless for most of my 50+ years after having my class ring catch in a basketball net. It came loose before I was damaged. It scared me pretty bad because I knew several men at the time who were missing ring fingers. I wear a rubber wedding...

Boat is put away for winter. What to do every day ?

The lake is unlikely to freeze here so no winter storage for mine. Temperatures do get below freezing so I make sure I drain what I can at the ramp and park it at home with the engine vertical. Finding shad for bait can be a challenge but I think the best time to catch blue catfish is during the...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

There is one thing about the newer tech that is nice… it runs much longer before it fails. I don’t know of very many pre 1980 vehicles that would run 200,000 miles relatively trouble free with only one change of spark plugs. Most cars today easily make that mark.
