    Engine wont Start

"A '73 Merc 850 should be battery-powered CDI ignition. It should have hot spark........." Well Chris, where does it get that "hot spark" if not from a good, well charged battery, and proper cabling capable of delivering the necessary voltage during the cranking load on the 12v system.

    Engine wont Start

How hot is your battery and how good are the connections. You need at least 10V across the starter contact to starter metal housing (or ground lug if starter has one, for the starter to spin the engine at 200+ RPM to get enough spark amplitude to ignite the spark plugs. This should show up in...

Lanyard to disable engine when operator leaves the helm

My experience with large waves is to not take them head-on. 45* and slow speed to maintain steerage, has been my solution. On some, where it seems appropriate, if your boat has a wide beam for lateral support, I have run in the trough and slowly moved up over the crest till I was out of the...

    CHARGING QUESTION

The rectifier module may not contain a regulator. Without a regulator, 16V is a common output at higher RPMs. With a regulator it will stop at 14.5V. I haven't checked on this, but a red stator is used with a 16 amp regulator on regulated power sources (like my 2002 90 and 115 have) whereby...

    Prop size and pitch

Hull to water contact is a big player in boat speed.....if you have power trim and tilt, just get up on plane, tuck the trim in to the point that steering gets to be heavy. Record your speed/RPMs. Trim out till the boat wants to porpoise and make the check again. Proof's in the pudding as the...

Lanyard to disable engine when operator leaves the helm

That's why most lower units have an overrun clutch in F gear. Otherwise every time you chop the throttle you are subject to having your teeth embedded in the windshield.

Replacement Battery for Mercury Bigfoot 60hp

200 cca is plenty for that engine. Question is what else is on the battery and when was the last time you charged it......they do self discharge so the day before you go on an outing, get out your voltmeter and read the battery voltage....if not above 12.6 put it on the charger overnight.....an...

    Prop size and pitch

I had a 1988 115 tower on the same length, pad hull, Ranger BB and a 19P original Laser would get that boat up on the pad and at 6000 RPM ran 50 MPH at max trim. Something is definitely wrong with the engine.

    Water/Fuel filter

I don't know the brand off hand now. It appeared to be a quality unit with a glass container for catching water and viewing, quite large, maybe a quart size. I had put a fuel pump kit in the engine not too long before I added the filter, so I didn't expect that to be a problem.

Steel OMC 3 gallon tank issue

When I was a teenaged kid and getting started in my boat ownership, I thought the 2 tube OMC fuel line setup was cool.......being a stupid kid!!!!! Decades later the subject came up and I realized that you pressurized the fuel tank to force fuel into the carburetor. Well since everybody else...

    pdf service manuals

What are you looking for in a manual???? I have dozens of manuals for my equipment and a couple of PDF versions which are a PIA since you have to copy a page and take it with you to the maintenance area whereby a leaflet manual is right there at your side.

    Water/Fuel filter

I just tweaked ebay and found one priced within reason and bought it. It was fairy large but running a 115 hp engine I didn't give it a second thought. I had ample space for installing below deck. What did happen was that the added resistance in sucking fuel out of the tank, and high lift...

2nd battery needed if installing prawn puller??

In my early years of running a new, low powered trolling motor on a 16' Chrysler Sport Fury, 85 hp Chrysler engine, with a single cranking battery, I ran the battery down to the point where it didn't have enough energy to start a new 85 HP engine. I had to pop the cowl, get the cranking rope...

Lanyard to disable engine when operator leaves the helm

Texas has the same law. I think its a good idea since I always boat alone and sometimes I get up around 50 and things happen pretty fast......and I am a senior citizen, without the faculties I once had.

I think the replaceable plastic/brass prop cores are a piece of "DUNG" and nobody is going to convince me otherwise!!!!!!!

OK for the spark plug gap to be slightly off from recommended?

My service manual covering 90 and 115 2 strokes plus others shows both types of NGKs in the specifications section. I run the gapped version and like them much better, especially on the 115 2+2...lower 2 cylinders stay cleaner and come online faster.

WARNING !! WARNING !! About brand new sparkplugs I bought.

The problem is the center post is fragile. Must use the utmost care. I installed a set on my engine and they came set to 0.030 and my engine requires 0.040. Was careful and didn't have a problem.

    85 373v ranger with 150 xr 2 black max

Is your 23 ported? If you want more hole shot and like your top end, have a prop shop port your prop. I had a laser original on a bass boat that was ported. Hammering down in the hole due to the porting taking the load off the blades, the engine got up in RPMs really fast giving me a good...

Constant ringing noise from throttle when motor is running.

According to Faztbullet, when this problem occurs the oil level sense magnet has fallen off it's mounting and the tank thinks its empty and shorts out causing the alarm. He has posted repair procedures, one being cut the tank in half, replace the damaged parts and glue it back...
