    SX-M lower unit issues

Also be careful with buying used drives, unless the sellers are reliable, have a guarantee that they will stand behind and you have time to run the boat before the warrantee expires to make sure it's OK, I would spend the extra dough for a reman with a good warrantee, from as local a place, as...

How do you all like your remote oil filter setups?

Keep in mind you have to be careful with any remote oil filter system because there are a lot more places they can leak oil. The adapter on the block, the oil line fittings etc. If your boat has decent access for a once a season oil change you can just keep doing that.

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Me either but every boat is different. On mine I remove the rear seat on that side & battery and have good access. But on some boats it can be a real challenge. On the OPs boat that ledge has to come out.

Bravo 3 steering cable stuck in housing

I think that’s what you’re going to have to do, remove the P/S actuator. If you have access it’s not easy but do-able. I removed the exhaust on both sides. Was there a water leak in that area? Looks to be a bit more corrosion than typical.

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

The starter your best shot is to remove he exhaust first to see if you can get under it to reach the bolts. It can be tight. Can you remove that ledge on the deck that surrounds the engine? I see screws holding it down on the inside. With it off you might have a chance to get ‘er done. I...

How do you all like your remote oil filter setups?

It is a bypass valve, that opens if the filter clogs, this "should" be replaced if you change from a normal block mounted filter to the remote, due to the extra resistance to flow in the remote filter hoses, you don't want the oil to by pass the filter much of the time. However, in some boat...

    Fogging Oil Substitute

This is really a matter of climate. If you’re in a dry climate with minimal temp swings I agree prob not needed for short term storage. I do it because we are a very damp climate, sometimes wide temperature swings and outside storage. Example: open up the boat cover & engine lid I often find the...

I use 50% here in Long Island NY we are a pretty damp climate here. That stops mold growth for the most part….

    A real useful tool….

I got one of those endoscope camera and esp for I/Os used in salt water they are real time savers. Today I used it to scope the water intakes of the Cobra drive where I have had an issue with barnacles growing there in the past. Found a little growth easily removed with a coat hanger wire. I’m...

Replacement Exhaust Manifolds for Merc 496

If they are original from 2006 and used in brackish water, they should have been replaced at least 8 years ago! I change mine every 5-7 years depending on the hours I have put on it each season. Barr exhaust is good, just make sure to check the flatness of the sealing surfaces.

2007 Merc 4.3MPI slow initial cranking

I don’t use the studs; I installed marine grade battery clamps on the terminals of the cables; this allows you to use the large terminals on the battery….

2007 Merc 4.3MPI slow initial cranking

Ever checked the plugs for water intrusion from the water cooled exhaust? The only time I had starting troubles with my 4.3 was when the head gaskets started leaking and I had a bit of water in 2 cyls.

PSA for those with the MerCruiser quick drain system, EVEN in fresh water!

https://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/threads/engine-drain-ports-clogged.482165/ as has been posted many times here, and I'll add, this is a fresh water boat, so it doesn't happen only in the salt pond where I spend my time....

Bone headed move - put the plug in with 3M 4200

Yep you don't have to tighten them with a dying strain, it's not like a lug bolt on a car it is just to seal out water. I like putting thick grease on them even though the metal used doesn't corrode. If you have trouble with them the threads maybe damaged, and it may be time just to replace the...

2007 Merc 4.3MPI slow initial cranking

Cables can corrode under the insulation and if you don't peel it back you'll never know, unless you can measure the resistance of the cable.

My pleasure and stay healthy! With my back I get little warning signs to stop and as long as I listen to them I go ok.
