    yes.... best ta change both at same time.. tha "A #" is mostly jus a superceded number.. all 7778A's are pretty much same and any will work.

    no.. its justa production down housing with no liner and those holes drilled for an "open" sorta exhaust.. little quieter than tha hi perf offshore down housing... clamp and trim is same as hi perf "offshore"..

    yeah.. thats a lot later model.. '95 or better.. think '94 and older had exhaust slots where that one has anodes....

    can't tell from that angle.. pre-load has a "pin" stickin' outta tha top of tha driveshaft.. can't see either slots or anode right above tha cav plate either.. 4 hole inlet is on small dia. XR4/6 case only..

    justa 'bout all 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 are interchangeable with a few things that need ta be done in some instances.. knowing what comes witha lotta experience 'cause there isn't any thing published ta tell ya what goes with what... that gear case is ok for a spare but its whats called a "pre-load...

    get yaself a new power head gasket (for either one, xr6 or efi) and get after it..... justa a reminder.. be sure ta disconnect (one 7/16's nut) the "sliding" part of tha shift linkage at tha anchor bracket before ya pull tha ph!..

    jus sounds like it has something ta do with tha poppit???.. did ya check tha "staked" bushing in tha block.. its not supposed ta rotate at all.

    sometimes in tha poppet tha plastic disc will get slightly "warped".. you will not notice it unless ya lookin' for it.. we built our own from alum. stock ta replace tha plastic.. that can cause what your experiencing.. if ya put new parts in it maybe that was it???

    strange.. first time entered serial number on Merc's web site came up as 2011 4 cyl. 4 stroke.. now it says number not found???

    shows up in parts as 2010..... 2011 is a 4 cylinder 4 stroke.. could be either 2010 or 2011 depending on quarter it was built??? whats really strange is both model and serial number shows up as a 4 cyl. 4 stroke on brunswick (Merc) parts site???

    outboard was very hard to start after sitting a while then smoked a lot

    tha heavy smoke indicates its gettin way more fuel than needed for whatever rpm its tryin' ta run and/or not firin' properly.. may be time for injector and injector o-ring service... don't know where ya are and/or what type fuel ya get in that location but fuel lines may need a close check...
