Showing the Boston Whaler 13 some TLC . . .

I have had boats and boats since I was 19 years old. My Whaler is the best I ever had. It will follow me to the nursing home. Nice project. Keep us posted.

Water coming in through bilge pump

I never had a boat with a bilge pump discharge that was NOT on the side of the boat. Seems like a bad design to me. If it were me I would put a check valve in the line. Regardless, I would also make a call to Formula and see what they had to say.

What to do with old 2 stroke mix

Fuel related problems are mostly self inflicted. That goes double for all the ethanol related complaints (that aren't related to ethanol anyway). Case in point - I have an old classic outboard boat that is used once a year - on the way to the local Antique Boat Show. EVERY year I have a half...

Mercury's serial number lookup web page is the ultimate authority.

    Ranger Vs Nitro Bass Boats

Rangers are over-priced because of the name and all the fancy stuff. Buy a Whaler. Not fancy, but over-built.

    2003 Stingray 230lx Bilge questions

The stern one is likely the bilge pump, and the bow port likely a cooler drain. Easy peasy, follow the hose.

Hey S.E. Michigan--where's the BEST place for boat & motor parts?

If you have a local marine dealer, go there. If not, and for outboard parts, Laing's Outboards in NY.

What did you do to your boat today?

Nothing. After being an avid boater for 50+ years, when I buy a new boat I already know what to do it. While I'm waiting for delivery I start ordering a whole bunch of stuff. Then, when she arrives I spend 2 days drilling holes and installing parts before she ever gets splashed.

    Fastest Mercury 50hp four stroke

A $600 SS Mercury Enertia will increase your speed by 0.5 mph and efficiency by 1.0%. The other option is to replace the motor with a 75 HP 4-stroke, and then put on the $600 prop.

Non slip adhesive padding - removal and replacemet

I bought a piece of "bulk" non-slip from E-Bay a few years ago. The piece was big enough for 4 trailers. I simply had to cut pieces to match the existing ones I took off. Sorry I don't remember the vendor. Google it.

    Ok. Trailer time!

Trailers are Jan-Dec. All expire 12/31 no matter when you first registered it. In Dec you get a letter / form in the mail to renew, and it asks for your inspection sticker serial number. In the past when I bought new boats the dealer always went to the DMV ahead of time, so when I picked it...

    Johnson vs Merc

My experience with Mercs in that time frame wasn't good. Today, their 4-strokes are bulletproof. A JohnnyRude in that time frame would have been my choice. But, you said "rebuilt". That would be a deal breaker for me. Obviously, a PO didn't maintain it well. Personally, I'd keep looking...

    Ok. Trailer time!

In NY the annual inspections are done and submitted by computer. When you go to renew the registration if you don't have an inspection on file within 12 months, they will refuse to register. Cops look at the dashboard of your car for a current sticker, and I agree they don't ask about the...

    Will a 24’ pontoon fit a 22’ trailers?

Trailers are rated for weight and length. BOTH, not one or the other. You need to either get a 22' boat, or a 24' trailer. Simply put, it's a safety issue.

Who wants to play "Your opinion MIGHT matter"?

When you said FINAL you blew me out of the water. I became a boater in about 1954, and owned my first own boat in 1968. My Final boats finally arrived in 2017 and 2019. That was after many moons of trying different things. A buddy had a Browning just like yours. Nice boat and all, and yours...

    Merc 3.5 4-stroke Starting Issues

2017 Model, used as a kicker, maybe 10 hours total usage. It has always started with 3 or 4 pulls and run flawlessly. When I shut it down I always turn off the fuel tank lever and run it out until it stalls. This year the first time out it took an unusual number of pulls to get it to run...

    Outboard Mounting Height

Reading the whole post is what lead to the answers you were given. When you wrote what you did it is logical that the reader needs to consider it as a whole because all the items are probably related. If you need to remove any statement then it is you that fell flat on your face. And once...

Hooked up my battery with the wrong polarity

I personally can't itemize concerns, but since the Owner's Manual says not to I usually comply. Also, I thought it was common knowledge.

Question on starting an outboard. And fuel line question(s)

I stand corrected. I have too many motors to remember the different vintage subtleties. However, I did dig out an old '73 Johnson manual to reference the starting procedure. There is indeed a "start" setting, as well as "shift". Maybe you should ebay a manual. Invaluable reference. After a...

Question on starting an outboard. And fuel line question(s)

I believe the dial is to set the idle SPEED. It's normally used to set your trolling speed, not mixture. No need to hard wire the fuel lines. Your connectors are shot. Simply replace the connectors. To start set the choke to full and then close it when the motor is running smoothly. Set...
