Lower unit will not go all the way in

Shift into F gear and slowly turn the prop ccw...the direction where you can rotate the drive shaft, not the overrun clutch direction, while "jiggling" the LU with hand pressure. 3/4" is about the length of the powerhead to drive shaft "spline" engagement....seems your teeth aren't lined up...

    60hp Merc intermittent power loss

Get a companion and go out with the engine cover off. While they take care of the helm, you get back there and start wiggling fuel lines including the line from the tank, including both ends. Then take the cap off again and see if it makes any difference. On outings where it worked and didn't...

1999 90 hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke mercury no power, sounds fine

Well an air leak is a great idea.....you can start with your fuel lines. If they are OEM they are way overdue for replacement.

What's wrong with the general purpose prop that came on it?

1999 90 hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke mercury no power, sounds fine

On checking the fuel pump and was ok, you may have missed THE smoking gun....diaphragms loose their plasticizers over the years and get stiff. A stiff diaphragm doesn't pump much fuel. The hole is probably a vent or a manufacturing necessity, like "freeze plugs" in an engine block...have...

    2003 Mercury 25 HP won’t crank

Agree with Sea Rider on the fuel pump not sucking. If the tank vent were closed and the pump was pumping you would have a collapsed bulb and couldn't get it to puff up so that you could squeeze it. There are fuel pump repair kits numerous places, may be here.

    Trim tab feedback

If you have deep pockets and smart tabs aren't smart enough for you try the hydraulically adjusted tabs...you can put them down like flaps on a 747 and raise them up and out of the way when on the Pad! Another option is a ported prop (if yours isn't ported) in helping the hole shot. Would be a...

    Help with motor height adjustment

One has to realize that water leaving the bottom of the boat returns to the surface. Rate of return dependends on viscosity of the water and boat speed. Second point is that boat hulls are seldom level when running in the water. With that said, and the fact that once the transom passes over...

    60hp Merc intermittent power loss

Passing that test and running smoothly tends to tell me that you have a clog in the fuel distribution system somewhere. The fuel pump sucking couldn't dislodge the culprit but the extra pressure Pushing rather than Sucking did. I'd revisit fuel filter in the engine, and fuel strainer in the...

3 blade SST vrs High five

Repost under question about I/O prop and include your specs listed. You should get the guys currently running I/Os and can dial you right in.....some really good I/O talent frequent the site. I haven't had one for 40 years and I am not current.

Did you do the bulb test? Answering this question will bump you back to the top for better visibility for someone more knowledgeable to see.

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

Depends.....height of bottom of the skeg from pavement when sitting on the trailer; amount of up and down motion of trailer vs towing vehicle...how much clearance do you need with the engine down; on launching and loading, if using a concrete public ramp and you pass the above test no reason...

1999 90 hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke mercury no power, sounds fine

Your magnet that operates the safe switch for oil in the tank came unglued and fell off. You can cut the tank open, reglue it and glue your tank back together (that process was given to me by a person in the repair business so he must know the tricks on what makes it work), or buy a new tank...

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

Tilt and trim operated from the remote console is made for that engine. The shocks are removed and hydraulic cylinders are added in their place with a hydraulic pump, high pressure lines and a fluid sump. I had an '84ish Merc 850 with just such an arrangement. You might find salvageable parts...

3 blade SST vrs High five

My guess is the High 5 is ventilating, causing the problem referred to as "prop slip" which is exactly what you are telling us you are getting...too many blades for the speed travelled...that's the problem with too many blades. Prop slip is bad operating efficiency for one thing. It's good if...

2001 40HP Mercury 2 stroke losing power after a short time

The hose visit is a valid question. I had a 2002, 90 hp triple 2 stroke that spent it's life on Ethanol. At 10 years of age I was having similar problems. In cleaning out the carbs, I found little black specks like I found by using a cotton swab and swabbing the inside of a fuel line to check...

    LU gear lube

Yes. The first engine I had with double vents was the 2002 3 cylinder 90 hp 2 stroke. For some reason they felt they had to ensure that all the bubbles were out of the oil....my assumption for their reasoning. On quantity, not much, probably half a tube if you bought it in the...
