    Mercruiser 5.7L warm start challenges

Before re-starting the hot engine remove the flame arrestor and look if the choke is closed and as SD suggested look down the air horn to look for fuel leaking. Also connect a volt meter to the + or bat side of the coil to measure the voltage when the starter is engaged. There should be full...

    Ford 302 pinging

All 188s came only with Holley carburetors. Someone may have taken the adapter from a 233 which only came with Rodchesters atop the Holley pattern adapter that mounted the Rodchester.

What do I check next on overheating issue?

If every thing suggested checks out then you probably have a case of “Bravoitis”. This is a phrase that the Donzi and other sport boat owners call it. From the age of your drive you may be getting exhaust gasses if your exhaust exits through the drive. Also there may be a foreign object in the...

    Ford 302 pinging

The anti siphon valves are threaded into the 90* elbow on top of the tank fuel outlet. Have you ever checked to see if there is a small cylindrical filter inside the tube that goes into the tank? There is a good chance that there is one, you need to remove the tube and make sure to remove it.

    Ford 302 pinging

There were 2 types of anti siphon valves. Aluminum and brass. The aluminum ones have given problems in the past. The brass ones are the better ones. If your fuel pressure gets low at full throttle that could be the source. Try to have the 6 gallon tank ready to switch over when you run the...

    3.8 OMC replacement motors?

The cheapest easiest thing for you would be to find a 3.8 from a junk vehicle and rebuild it with a new set of manifolds. Finding a complete running 4.3 from a Mercruiser/ Volvo package is possible, it just depends on what part of the country you are at. Just like SD said about the drive...

    Ford 302 pinging

Just for kicks, get a 6 gallon outboard tank filled with 91-93 then run it wide open to see if the pinging is still present. The original 302s came with Holley carburetors. The 302s were rated at 225 with a 4 barrel Holley. Try to find a good iron manifold from a Mustang, Comet or Fairlane...

    Ford 302 pinging

In regards to the power valve spring, if there ever was water in the float bowl that caused the spring to rust then it will be weakened and will result in a lean out at full throttle.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

Just a suggestion. The “O” rings can be had at any auto store by matching them up. When the valve block is off put a straight edge across the bolt holes, most times the block is not flat. Just take a file and some Emory cloth to restore the flat surface.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

You got it. The line on the left goes to the “out” port on the reverse lock valve. Then it goes to the block on the bottom of gimbal housing. You just need the female 1/8” npt to 3/16” inverted flare plumbing fittings for the 3/16” inverted flare nuts. You could restore the low pressure...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

You should not try turning the inner hex screw. That is a pressure regulator and to adjust it a pressure gauge is needed, the wrong setting will blow up the outer tubes of the rams. You are right about the fitting change. Try connecting the system like I described. If you luck out and find a...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

It looks like someone replaced the down port fitting with an inverted flare style. Originally it was a compression style for the plastic lines like hanging off the reverse lock valve. If you replace the fittings on the trim indicator cylinder with inverted flare style you will be able to re...

The only thing that atf will do is foam. Power steering fluid does not, just try to purge as much of the atf out. Try to post a picture of the bottom of the pump where the hoses connect.

    change steering shaft

The gimbal ring is the thinnest @ the 10 & 2 o’clock area. I used to use a 36” pair of bolt cutters or a reciprocal saw. Then it is easy to pull out the ring after removing the bottom shaft. It is possible to remove the upper mounting hardware without hole sawing the holes but it helps.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

Try using a little compressed air to move the piston in the trim sender cylinder. It probably still works and should move the trim gauge. If it does just connect it back in the hydraulic system. The drive may stay down at idle in reverse. Finding a good reverse lock valve are pretty slim. In...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

It looks like the reverse lock valve has been by passed. The incoming line between the trim indicator and the valve uses 1/8” npt male X 1/4” female compression fitting like on the lines hanging off the trim indicator. Originally there was a 1/8” npt male X 1/4” female 90* compression fitting...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

If my memory is correct the white plastic low pressure line goes from the pump to one side of the indicator ram cylinder then out to the reverse lock valve where the grey hose goes to the trim block at the bottom of the gimbal housing. There is a bleed screw on the top of the indicator ram...

The gimbal housings are different. They are wider to clear the “ear muffs” mounted on the gimbal ring.

    SX outdrive

There is one thing which happens, the drive shaft may be bound up in the drive coupler. If that is what is wrong then the only way the to remove the drive will be to cut the shaft just behind the engine then the engine needs to come out to replace the coupler. After that then the drive shaft...
