Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

The Premium is for 75 hp & under; the High Performance is for over 75 hp. I have used the High Performance gear oil in my Cobra for many years with good results. Local price is about $17/gallon. Used to be $11-13 or so. Pennzoil also makes a marine gear lube for lower units I’d check if that’s...

    Replacing 1978 351 c.i. V-8 OMC Stern Drive in 1978 Starcraft 21' ...recommends (?)

Agree 100% I like a well tuned Quadrajet; after a cold start they run very well. Even better is a pre Vortec engine that can use a simple trouble free mechanical fuel pump. For a few reasons electric pumps can be a headache in boats….

    Replacing 1978 351 c.i. V-8 OMC Stern Drive in 1978 Starcraft 21' ...recommends (?)

    1) The OMC stringer system, does not match up with anything else ever built 2) the way it is designed, you may wind up having to reinforce the transom since the stringer drives supported all the weight of the engine/drive system on the engine stringers. Later OMC drives (Cobra) Merc and Volvo...

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

A 1994 should be a roller cam but no balance shaft, IIRC Adding the Vortec heads shouldn't be difficult, I considered it but wanted to keep the manifold heated choke for my Quadrajet, which I could not do with the Vortec because it has no exhaust crossover. However if you're running an electric...

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

OB vs I/O the only way I’d still have an I/O is if it is pre cat converters and if it had EFI & it acted up I’d convert it to a 4bbl carb & low pressure electric pump. And, with good engine access. Otherwise if you look at the parts prices for modern I/Os, combined with poor access, there is...

    Starter

That or ARCO Marine makes nice starters & alternators. The main thing with marine starters is keeping water off of them. They are spark shielded but not water proof! If you can’t figure out their catalog call ARCO someone does answer the phone & tell them you need a starter for a marine Ford 5.0.

First post a pic of the engine The Chevrolet/GM starters are totally different than Ford

Are you sure? That model number comes up as a Ford. Distributor in front = Ford Distributor in back = GM/Chevrolet

    Starter

Looked it up; it’s 5.0 Ford with a 2bbl carb, 1989 model year. So you’re looking for a small block Ford marine starter. I like ARCO for starters & alternators.

    Starter

The engine is a 5.0 2bbl carb but you need to know is it a Chevrolet or Ford engine. And if a Chevrolet is it the staggered bolt pattern or straight across. If a Chevy you can use the correct PMGR starter they are lighter smaller & spin the engine faster.

    Penta 4.3 GL in saltwater?

ARCO Marine makes good quality marine starters & alternators; not the cheapest but good. I have both on my boat…. Barr Marine makes good quality aftermarket exhaust at a reasonable price; also have those on my 4.3 V6…. As far as motor oil you can use straight 30 or 40, 15/40, 20/50 or even...

    Volvo 5.0Gi winterizing

that is mysterious, maybe some crud got into the threads, might need a thread chaser if you ever get it out. One nice thing about most later OMC/Volvo manifolds, they are the same casting for each side, and you have threaded holes on each end. So if the rear drain plug is stuck, just remove the...

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

That's completely insane. People make fun, but that's why I kept the old boat. Mechancial fuel pump from Carter, marine version, don't have to buy from the robber barons at Mercruiser or VP, $50, they last a LONG TIME. Can be bought at Jeg's or Summit Racing. Carb rebuild kit, the best...

    5.0 GXi oil extraction

Honestly that was the only thing I could think of, I have never had that problem with my engine which uses a similar system but like I said earlier when I replaced an old (30 year old) mechanical fuel pump, there was some sludge build up inside the pump, the part that was inside the engine...

    Volvo 5.0Gi winterizing

Whenever you can get those plugs out what I do is coat the threads with either Evinrude triple guard grease or Evinrude gasket sealer. I’ve never had one seize up even in salt water.

    5.0 GXi oil extraction

The other thing you could do VERY CAREFULLY is to use a heat gun to heat the oil pan to about 100-125*F that may make it easier. 50* I don’t t think you can suck out oil. I have done this twice; once was when my engine had leaky head gaskets & had to change the oil 3-4 times to get the water...

    5.0 GXi oil extraction

I have the same set up on my old OMC 4.3 in fact I think that Volvo adopted OMC’s design during the joint venture between OMC & Volvo. I have never had trouble sucking out all the oil in the pan with the Topsider vacuum pump & the garden hose fitting. I wonder though if an engine wasn’t...

    1990 5.7L L.E. OMC Cobra - Various Questions

There is a Holley build # on the air horn that will tell you exactly what it is. The 4160 also came in different CFM ratings. The other pretty definite sign vs the 4175 is that since the 4160 is a square bore carb there will be a square to spread bore adapter between the square bore carb &...

    1990 5.7L L.E. OMC Cobra - Various Questions

First 2 pix are a 4160: this is a 4175 (Spread Bore) The 4175 Spread Bore was intended for a replacement for the spread bore Rochester Quadrajet However, my experience with Holley vs Rochester, the same engine with the Rochester ran consistently better. Holley's quality control as of late is...

    1990 5.7L L.E. OMC Cobra - Various Questions

For the carb, it looks like a 4160, judging by the fuel inlet, the 4175 I think had a different style inlet, there is a # stamped on the carb air horn (go over to Holley.com) that will tell you exactly what it is and what parts fit. Looks like you have a conventional distributor, lucky it's not...
