planning first trip to thousand islands

All good suggestions. We try to go to Potter's Beach every year, but sometimes we can't. If there is a strong west wind, the water is too choppy there and it won't be accessible. In that case, you can go to the west shore of Eel Bay, just south of Canoe Point. It's another popular beach...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

If it were me the first think I would do is tear them down and see what we have to work with. Surface rust? Internal rust? Surely, the bearings need to be replaced, but maybe a simple race replacement is all that's needed. If the whole hub needs to be changed, just buy in like kind. Axles...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Rust and flat tires are more of an indication of poor maintenance. If the trailer combo was correct in the beginning, then why is what doesn't need fixing. Tire / wheel combos are easily obtained on the internet. Actually, going this route is usually cheaper than buying tires and mounting them...

A few questions from a learner

Its really funny. I was sitting here watching the snow come down, wishing Spring was not too far off. But then I remembered the olden days, and that's what made me laugh. If a guy in high school wanted to be really cool he put a tach in a chrome plated bullet mount on the steering column of...

1990 Sea Ray 160, Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha one gen 1

The original 3.0 was 140 HP. About the time they added electronic ignition and maybe other changes (I dunno) it was downgraded to 135. The lower HP models at the time were 2.5 liter engines. If that little Searay with 2 people aboard can't run a 19p there is another issue. Its an oldie boat...

1990 Sea Ray 160, Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha one gen 1

First of all, check your tach to be sure you are getting the correct numbers. I agree that 21p is too tall, but I think that a 15 will over-rev the engine. It might be OK for skiing, but don't go WOT until you verify that your rpms are correct. My current SeaRay gave data that made no sense...

1990 Sea Ray 160, Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha one gen 1

My Stingray was a 1984 and it had a 17 deg. deadrise. I looked in my collection of catalogs and I couldn't find a SeaRay 160, but there were several years back then that they made a 175. That hull also had a 17 deg. deadrise and it was several hundred pounds lighter than my 19 footer.

Trailer questions for vintage Glastron Tri-hull

Good thought, but the frame is still not long enough.

1990 Sea Ray 160, Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha one gen 1

I can't compute the data here. Somting fishy. We had a 19' Stingray that was originally propped with a 21 pitch Michigan SS prop. It was extremely good, but not perfect. I had then prop re pitched to 20 and it ran close to 4800 rpm, literally jumped out of the water and ran in the high 40's...

Trailer questions for vintage Glastron Tri-hull

That trailer was NOT the correct one for that boat, no matter what motor is on it. It was wrong from the beginning. Trailers are rated by boat weight and length. Even if the weight was correct, it was designed for a much shorter boat. You need a new trailer. No way to modify that one...

Bow Trolley on Trailer instead of Winch, stock

Interesting concept for sure. I would be interested to hear if anyone else ever saw such a thing. What country was it built in? Brand? Boat brand? Since power loading is highly frowned upon in my area because of damages to the ramp, if I liked the boat that trailer would be the first to go.

Just bought this pontoon from dealer, got home with no straps on back !

Here's a follow up. Look at the thread below: "think of when towing a boat". If that doesn't convince you about trailer straps, you just are confused.

Bow Trolley on Trailer instead of Winch, stock

In my 65+ years of boating, that's the strangest contraption I have ever seen. Somehow, the bow of the boat needs to be attached securely to the trailer. Also, the "trolley" needs some way to be pulled all the way forward. Based on the pics, I don't see either.

Just bought this pontoon from dealer, got home with no straps on back !

I did a quick google but couldn't find the right web site. Every state has their own requirements re. trailer brakes, lights, length, width, speed, etc. The last time I saw the chart I believe many if not most states REQUIRE transom tiedowns. Regardless, its simply common sense. Case in...

Just bought this pontoon from dealer, got home with no straps on back !

When I took delivery of my last 2 new boats, both dealers had me sign a paper swearing that I would not drive down the highway without transom straps. One boat came with them standard, the other I brought them with me (I got a rebate for not accepting the safety package because I already had...

Add kicker to fm 1775 wt can it be done

If you are asking about putting a Merc on a Lowe, the answer is probably yes. But you are going to need the correct bracket and the installation will need many many calculations and would probably need to be done by a pro.

I'm advised to change Tohatsu MFS9.9El's prop...

Trolling at low speed and running full throttle to get you home in an emergency are the same requirement. The engine needs to run WOT at the engine's spec rpm range. In "most" cases, the lowest pitch prop available for that motor will be the one required for your application. Buy that prop...

    Freeport Boat

I have had budget boats that had pointy bow and flat transom diagrams and no other info. I have also had upper scale boats that had comprehensive owner's manuals, including electrical and mechanical diagrams. Of course, the engine manuals are a separate book. Google the manufacturer from you...

    Second fuel tank

I have run 3 portable tanks many times in the past. Google 3 position fuel valve. I would simply run one tank to completely empty, and thus the engine would die. Go aft and switch the valve to tank #2, hit the button and it would start up in a few seconds. Now, if I was in view of Niagara...

planning first trip to thousand islands

Targeted boats are the ones with teenagers in control, or if several bikini babes are on the bow. Also, boats that are obviously overloaded. Gofasts that are disobeying any law are given a pass because the officers certainly don't want to offend the rich guys.. Family boats being operated...
