Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

Not sure about the possible crack/casting parting line. I would be cleaning the sealing surfaces up the best I could and trying it again, like Scott said. BTW, my exhaust system used in salt almost 5 years now does not have that corrosion you see where the manifolds and elbows mate. Since you...

Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

The sealing of the rings is not 100%. I had a similar problem with a different (likely) cause. I my case it was leaky head gaskets that allowed water to seep into 2 cyls after the engine was shut down & cooled off. That put a fair amount of water into the oil over about a week. When I took it...

Mercruiser 5.7 EFI Water in Oil

To check the manifolds with acetone you have to remove them from the engine & remove the elbows. Be careful because acetone is very flammable. You can clean up the mating surfaces with a mill bastard file & then check them for flatness with a straightedge & feeler gauges. Should be less that...

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

The issue with the clear plastic bowls is that they swelled from E10 gas and that caused leaks & some even fell off. They were redesigned and that’s no longer a problem. If someone leaves their boat in the water where moisture accumulates in the fuel they can hold a lot more water that the...

    Mechanical fuel pump gph question

I don’t know what ignition system you have but I’d be curious about your total timing advance….

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

BUT....we still don't have an opinion one way or the other....is the more expensive Racor with the bowl, worth the $$$? I'm going to keep using the standard filters I've used all the years I had this boat because I haven't had water related fuel system problems, but I know people for sure who have.

New (2020) Alpha One Gen 2 wont come off

As far as the need to pull the drive each season, if you have the Merc coupler and can get at that grease fitting & can grease it, I would at least check the bellows very carefully for small cracks and as soon as you see any pull the drive & inspect the gimble & ujoints & replace all the...

Fuel water separator 2000 200hp Saltwater series 2 stroke

If you’re not seeing any water & the gas is clear & clean I think what you’re using is good enough, I go thru the same thought process of using something “better” but it looks like we don’t have a “problem” to “fix”! Lol I do the same thing the gas from the filter goes in the lawnmower! BTW I DO...

    Winterizing Twin Cobra's

The way I look at it….raw cast iron & steel rust VERY fast in damp climates. I spray the leaf springs on the trailer with corrosion x several times a year; my springs never rust to bits like so many do here. So I fill the engine & manifolds. Still running the original short block & intake...

    Winterizing Twin Cobra's

The great debate 1)Some drain & leave it dry 2)Some drain & fill with AF to reduce corrosion of raw cast iron exposed to air I do mine as in # 2 Manual drain poke drains to make sure it really drains. Disconnect bottom end of J hose up front & let drain. Put gasket sealer on threads of drain...

    Replacement Oil Filters

I think the original filters on these was an AC PF52. Anything that crosses to that from Wix or Purolator would be fine.

    Old gas in 2024

When my boat was out of the water for a year and a half for various repairs (engine, carb, fiberglass) I wound up burning off 2.5 year old gas that was stabilized & fresh fuel added. My old carbed engine just burned it up! Checked for water in the fuel & it was fine. Not saying this is ideal...

Recommended oil for 05 Volvo Penta 5.0gxi e

I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating…if you have oil OCD like most of us can have sometimes do an oil analysis that will answer your question as to whether or not the oil you are using is adequate to protect the engine. It’s all about the difference in marine use vs automotive...

Recommended oil for 05 Volvo Penta 5.0gxi e

Most 15/40 oils are dual certified for both gas & diesel. If you have a roller camshaft the engine isn’t that fussy about oil the main issue is oil temperature & viscosity shearing after a long run on plane. If your oil pressure doesn’t drop below 20 psi after a run on plane & you’re not hearing...

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

Can’t use the clear bowl on an inboard only outboards but still can drain it without removing the filter. If you’re getting that much water the tank needs to be cleaned out & the cap & fuel fill checked for leaks.
