any advice on removing my engine head from the lower unit

I have some type of oil/fuel leak somewhere. Just by inspection from the outside, I can't tell where it is coming from. I don't think it is a huge leak, but I just would rather have no leaks at all! Everything is so cramped in my engine that I can't really inspect all the hoses that are down...

should I be filtering my two stroke oil?

I have a VRO system on my 1990, 90 Hp Johnson. THe fuel line has a filter, but there is nothing on the oil line. Should I install some type of oil filter between my oil tank and the VRO pump? I guess the fuel filter will clean my gas, but what guarantees the cleanliness of my oil?

Can't remove the gear case fill port threaded plug

I have a 1990, 90 Hp VJ90TLESB engine. I can remove the drain plug, but the fill plug is stuck pretty good. The plug has a single slot that looks like a flathead screwdriver could work, but the slot is sort of wide and not too deep. It is very difficult to get any leverage on it before the...

question about the Joe Reeves WOT spark advance procedure

I'm going to try Joe's procedure this weekend. But, I had a question on the step about removing the spark plugs. Do I need to remove the plugs, or just disconnect the wires going to them? If I leave the plugs in the engine, will the extra compression give me bad results?

radio seems to be sucking battery even when off

I boat a used boat with a 1990 90 Hp Johnson. When the radio is off (radio power switch in off position), it still seems to be drawing power (battery cable will spark if I remove it; it must be some type of memory thing). Can anyone suggest how to hook up the radio so it will be off even with...

how many wires should be on the battery terminals?

I boat a used 1990, 90 Hp johnson outboard VJ90TLESB. Each battery terminal has 2 wires going to it; one wire is really thick, and the other one is very thin. It seems like the thin one has something to do with the starter solenoid, tachometer and trim. Is this normal or did the guy before me...

new brand new voltage regulator/rectifier only gives 8 volts

I have a 1990, 90 Hp Johnson VJ90TLESB. I noticed that my battery was always dying. So, I checked out the voltage regulator/rectifier and stator using a SELOC repair manual. From my multimeter readings, it looked like the stator was fine but my voltage regulator was bad. My tachometer also seems...

I don't have a test wheel; what is the best way to set timing at 5000 RPM

Taking the advice from this forum, I purchased an OEM manual for my 1990 90 Hp Johnson VJ90TLESB. For the link and sync procedure, it says to use a test wheel. I've looked on the internet a little for a test wheel, but haven't had any luck. So, short of having a test wheel, how do I get 5000 RPM...

I ran my engine without water

1990 VJ90TLESB, 90 Hp Johnson I had my boat in the driveway with the muffs on, but forgot to turn on the water one time. It ran for between 5-10 seconds. When I noticed I stopped the engine and let it air cool. I went on the water the next day and received the high temp alarm (steady high...

Can I trust the TDC marking on my flywheel?

I'm going through my tech manual and it tells me how to determine TDC from my number one cylinder. I have a 1990 90 Hp Johnson VJ90LESB. But, I have had my flywheel off to replace my rectifier/voltage regulator and there is a key that locks in the clocking of my flywheel. So, I'm thinking that...

Can engine timing be good at one speed and bad at another?

I'm trying to resolve my poor idling problem on my 1990, 90 Hp Johnson. It runs great at full throttle, but performs poorly at idle. I was wondering if timing could be an issue? If timing were an issue, I would think that it would run poorly at all speeds? But, is it possible that the timing...

Remote control assemby obsolete!!! 1990 90 Hp

My remote control assembly no longer (or never did) have a button/plate under the throttle handle to maintain the boat in neutral when I move the throttle forward. The only way I can do it is to push in the button on the side of the throttle handle. When I look at the parts diagram, it shows my...

What is the PLATE, Idle Stop, used for?

I have a 1990 Johnson outboard, 2 stroke, 4 cylinder, model # VJ90TLESB. It is idling poorly. I've replaced the VRO pump, removed the carboretor and cleaned it (notice that one of the needle pins was not connected to the float so I connected it), and it still idles poorly. It runs great at full...
