Priming and painting question just happens to be boat related.

For OBs I use rattle can self etching primer, which is a medium green. I topcoat that with white or black and everything in between and see no difference. Topcoat with a light coat followed by a second light coat followed by a medium heavy wet coat, with an hour between coats. Don't forget...

    Unstuck a Stuck Engine

I've gotten stuck engines running again in the past, but this one is a particular bugger. It's a 1941 Johnson 9.3 HP twin and the pistons are froze solid. Its beeen soaking for a month now. One piston is all the way up and the other all the way down. I've pulled the exh manifold and can see...

    Bow flag pole

Piece of cake. Personally, I wouldn't own a boat that didn't have a bow pennant and a stern flag. If your bow light or your bow rail's bow form have a hole in it, buy a mahogany flagpole and whittle the end to fit the hole. If you have neither, then buy a simple flagpole socket, either straight...

    DIY boat storage stand?

My workshop has a 16' door so I didn't have the same problem. My working stands are 2x4's with the top covered with a remnant piece of carpet. If the door were too small I would have put casters on the stand and unloaded the boat in the driveway.

    2015 Waverunner Winterizing

Hate the thought, but I like to be prepared ahead of time. Anyone familiar with the 2015's with the new "RIDE" system? Just paid $85 for a full shop manual and it is basically useless. It tells what to do in some cases, but doesn't explain how to do it. Worse than that it shows maintenance...

Failed winch...almost lost the boat...(with pics)

A safety chain catches the boat as it flies in the air after something fails. A secure bow tie down won't allow the boat to move in the first place. Mine isn't home made, its OEM original equipment.

Mounting a flag on a 12ft Aluminum boat

Mine is a Starcraft 14 footer. Most tinnies have an aluminum bow form, plus transom forms with handles. My flag is attacghed to a simple flagpole socket, screwed into the transom form with self tapping screws.

Jet Boats Are Out - Outboards Are IN

Last year was the year of the outboard. Many manufacturers that previously only sold I/Os introduced OB models. This year, even more companies followed suit. Based on my own persomnal observations there were more new OB boats than Jets last season. While recently on vacation in the...

    Yamaha Waverunner Battery Drain

SeaDoos have a continuous parasitic drain from the security system. I put a battery switch on all of mine that were garage kept since security was not an issue. That kept the batteries full all of the time. Does a Yamaha FX HO Cruiser have the same issue, or can they be left connected all the...

    Factory Gloss On Wood Accents

Boaters have been doing it literally for centuries. Sure, new products come out all the time, but the old standards are still the old standards. Spar varnish! Look at my deck. Is that good enough?

    Kicker mount on swim deck.

I agree. The swim platform is not strong enough, plus its too low in the water to make it usable. My heavy duty bracket has been on the boat for 31 years now and the 9.9 OB has never come off. She rides well ijn the water and on the highway.

Unique, Very Cool, or Awesome Boat f/s

Converted helms are a common item in woodworking circles. What's even cooler is a complete transom cut off and turned into a couch. Prop, exhaust pipes and all intact. Nothing like a Lyman. Ours is a 1952...

planning to build my own boat

I saw the article as well, and boy did that bring back memories.... I built my first boat when I was 19, financed by a part time job at MickyDees flipin burgers. It was a precut kit for $165 - a 16' OB Runabout. They also sold a kit trailer and that was another $100. A brand new 40 HP Evinrude...

    Stingray boats

Our 190 Stingray is in the middle of her 31st season and we couldn't be happier. We used to upgrade every few years. The fact that we haven't since 1984 says it all. Our son's Stingray is now in her 7th season. We are Lake boaters - Lakes Erie and Ontario. Plus the mighty Niagara River. We have...

    "New To Me Boat" Enigma

Why don't we just say "I bought a new boat" (meaning brand new), or "I bought a second hand boat" (meaning used). This "new to me" sounds like a used car salesman selling a "pre-owned" gem that passed the 66 point checkup! Jus wunderin!

    proud of ur old motor?

The 2 oldies I currently run "daily" are a '53 Evinrude Big Twin and an '84 Evinrude 9.9. The '53 gets the most stares, but of course the boat is also of that vintage and the mahogany gleams like glass in the sun. The one that really gets stares, though, is the 1919 Rowboat Motor, that sounds...

    Stalling Coming Off Plane

Mercruiser 4.3 Carbed I/O, 3 years old. Starts and runs fine except when throttling back to idle speed. Then it stalls. Hard to start again, and when it does need to run at fast idle for a minute until it smoothens out. Then runs OK until slow down again. The dealer winterized and...

    Boat Storage and Parking

Re: Boat Storage and Parking I built a garage with an attached house. When the 5-car garage got full I built another in the back yard and ran a separate driveway to it. The second garage holds 3 boats, but I can fit the boy's 2 jetskis in it for Winter with a little moving around. The garage...

    Being temporarily boat-less!

Re: Being temporarily boat-less! Pikers! You call that a garage? Mine holds 3 cars, a jetski and a boat. We keep the trailer attached to the car so we can go out day after day without worrying about hitching up again. The little garage in the back only holds 3 boats. But for winter...

    Chene Anchor

A recent thread about a small tinny with a too large anchor and chain got me thinking. My slight arthritis has made hauling all that chain an issue as well. I was reading about the Chene Anchors, that reportedly don't require chain. Anybody with experience in that regard?
