    Sounds / looks like there is a hole in the engine block-----Time to shop for a new motor I think.----Where is that smoke / vapor coming from ?

    Looks like painting was done on this motor.----And perhaps motor was converted from a tiller motor.----Post some pictures of power head and gear case.----About 6 more pictures.----That might help you , not me.

    Post pictures of motors and cowlings.----What parts are you looking for?----Many parts are common for all years of production.---Why would a dealer not help you.

    Post #1 says he can not find a model # anywhere.-----There are those sellers who remove the tag.----Then when buyer finds out motor is 10 years older than advertised they can say ---" sorry I did not know "

    Compression too high?

    These motors have a compression release hole.-----Makes for smother / quieter idling.------Some earlier 3 cylinder 49 cube engines had compression of around 150 PSI.-----I do not believe it is difficult to find a rebuilt powerhead for a 1997 model.----Just need to know where to look.

    The spring on bottom of the gear needs to grip more.----It needs to be adjusted ( bent ) a little.----Or a zealous owner has lubricated that spring.----That is NOT to be greased!

    Overthinking on the compression on this motor.----Normally it would be about 120 / 130 on that motor.-----You have an optimistic seller.----Or a seller with a poorly calibrated gauge.

    The small lever is for throttle in neutral.----You push key in for priming / choke while cranking motor to cold start.----The dial is for throttle friction as indicated.

    Most control boxes have feature that allows you to increase RPM in neutral.----Best to ask around and learn.----Any pictures of the control box ?

    Evinrude model.----So yes , they marketed a 15 HP.

    There can not be electric shift on a 1973 model Evinrude.
