FWD Drive (forward facing drive) Volvo Penta

With these units I recall reading that the upper drive unit is the same for both the regular & forward drives and if the replacement Fwd lower unit is too expensive maybe you can find a cheaper used conventional SXA lower. That level of corrosion is extreme for a unit that new, & not left in...

Maybe you can contact Sea Ray to get a correct HIN & approximate weights from them

89 Volvo Penta AQ271C ignition or carb, maybe something else

OK you have a Prestolite BID unit, correct? I believe that those have mechanical (centrifugal) advance just like the points distributors did. Have you verified that the advance unit is in fact advancing the timing the specified amount the the specified RPM? They have centrifugal weights that can...

    Winterizing: Fuel in tank options?

I don't drain mine or run them out of gas but I start everything up every 2-3 months, make a huge racket and love the smell of 2 cycle exhaust and that keeps gas from evaporating in the carbs. The one most prone to that was the Toro because it uses a Mikuni carb with a float bowl on it not the...

    Replacing carb question

lol yeah I have posted that one a lot, but I used to think, oh well a Q-Jet is too complex for someone who's not an expert in carbs, it isn't. Only a bit more complex than that Rochester 2bbl. The fussiest carb I ever worked on was a 3bbl Kehin on my 1980 Honda 1300 Civic. Simplest, the Autolite...

    Replacing carb question

Looks like a Rochester 2GV or the Mercarb version of the same thing. The are easy to rebuild, better to rebuild a good original core than buy a 'remanufactured' Franken carb that you get on line. Get a book and learn how to do it. Not rocket science... Here's its big brother the mighty...

    Winterizing: Fuel in tank options?

Strange....I have 5 different 2 stroke yard tools that are running happily on 50:1 E10 gas 3 Echo machines (weed wacker, blower, hedge trimmer) 1 Husquvarna (saw) 1 Toro/Suzuki (snow blower) the oldest is 24 years old the newest is 11 years old... here very few (like maybe 2-3 in all of Suffolk...

    Working on A Volvo/Penta 350 and 280 leg?

They're saying it's a "new" engine but that must mean rebuilt or remanufactured because of the obvious vintage look of it....pre-1986 that's a LONG time ago.

    Working on A Volvo/Penta 350 and 280 leg?

Engine looks like a pre 1986 with perimeter valve cover bolts and probably a 2 piece main seal. Quadrajet carb & mechanical fuel pump. It all looks good from the pix

    Winterizing time!

If you have a Cobra with a carb just follow mine… And PS the next day or weekend I pull the drive & check the bellows, u joints & gimble bearing. On these old units they’re all greasable so you do that too…. Many people skip this step but that can be a mistake…doing this has helped me avoid...

    RWD Tow Vehicle Launch Issues?

People are surprised at what the V8 Grand will do. Rated for 7200 lbs and pulls a 20' (5,000 lbs) like the Super Chief. Even the first run Hemis have 375 ft lbs of torque. About 100 more than the Pentastar 3.6 V6. The later models have 390 ft lbs.

    Working on A Volvo/Penta 350 and 280 leg?

Also it depends on if it was used in salt or fresh. Fresh water I/Os usually will be much easier to work on. Get a factory shop manual, look up a guy by the name of Rick on the Bayliner Owners Club, he is one of the experts on those drives, I bet he can answer any question you might have. Don't...

    Winterizing time!

That's basically how I do mine, run engine, change motor oil & filter, then run again, check for leaks at filter, then fog engine & shut down. Then let it cool because that water in the block will be hot. Drain block from block drains, poke drains, and disconnect big hose from stat housing to...

    Water in spark plugs

On the OMC 4.3 with the 160* stat, my temps were usually from 160-170 or so, highest was just after coming off plane where it would go almost to 175 briefly but then cool down. You can check for water in the cyls even after just running it on the water hose, warm up engine, then ground high...

    RWD Tow Vehicle Launch Issues?

I towed our '88 Four Winns (5000 on the trailer) for years with the '98 Grand with the 4 liter six. While it wasn't ideal, if I hadn't upgraded to the '07 Grand Hemi, I would have re-geared it to 4.10:1 and that combined with the biggest transmission cooler I could fit, air bags in the rear...

    Axle weight capacity

That would be the total that the trailer can weigh, but not the carrying capacity (how heavy the boat can be) you subtract the weight of the trailer from the total that it can weigh and that's the carrying capacity. So if it has 2 3500 lb axles but weighs 1500 lbs, then at most the capacity...

    RWD Tow Vehicle Launch Issues?

yep they are almost as big as F-150s were 20 years ago! It was a wise move of FoMoCo to bring out the compact Maverick at a good price point.
