Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One Gen 2

Only one flapper below the rubber exhaust connector, that would be a good guess as to what you're seeing.

    mercruiser lower unit install

Check the upper drive shaft area for a buggered seal. Also the early gen 1s had an o ring on the shaft that could get caught up there.

Buy a used block will parts swap?????

Offhand I can't think of anything that would keep you from swapping either a long or short block. Afaik all of the 470 changes involved the accessories. That said, you're going to have a hard time finding anybody that knows year to year changes on these engines in that kind of depth.

    Stupid me, no oil

Well, I've done about 40 miles and all seems well. Haven't pushed it too hard, but ran at 3800 rpm for a while today. At speed it's steady 65 psi pressure. Hot engine at 600 rpm is 25 psi, which seems lower than prior but IDK. Comes up to 40+ psi at 1k rpm. No noises. Hopefully dodged a bullet.

    '04 Merc 25hp dead(ish) cylinder

Been chasing some poor running for the last few weeks. Originally was running well, but had a couple of episodes where it died at speed, difficult to restart. Noticed fuel leaking from somewhere around the carb. Rebuilt the carb with a crappy kit. Took it out once and all the gaskets...

    Outdrive oil leak..

IIRC the area between them is normally dry. the lower is exposed to water on one side and the upper to oil. If the upper fails oil will fill the cavity whereas if the lower fails water enters the cavity and rusts the gear. On mine the gear needed a speedi sleeve on one of the surfaces. EDIT: I...

    Outdrive oil leak..

If it was leaking it means both seals were bad. I can't remember off hand why the upper would need to be changed though if the lower has been replaced.

    Stupid me, no oil

Had been running great and been working very hard over the last week. Yesterday did a few hours of water sports (the kid did his first deep water slalom start and old dad managed to get a turn as well), then went on a fully loaded ride. Noticed oil pressure bouncing around 50 (usually around...

Alpha gen 1 shift cable adjustment.. cannot get reverse.

Have you looked at @achris video? One of the few that show you how to measure the tolerances. Also the actual service manual is pretty detailed. That clymer isn't the correct procedure. Also Reading initial post, did you raise the cable in the bracket slot? That's the initial adjustment if it...

Mercruiser 3.0 TKS - Hard to start when semi-cold

The point is that you have either a spring coil/choke OR a TKS module. They are completely different and don't co exist.

Time for my first bellow change, tips?

I'll be the lone dissenting voice... I've used Sierra bellows and qs. Year 6 on the Sierra and they look perfect still. The one concern is the water hose. I've heard that the OEM hose is pre molded into shape rather than straight, which would make the replacement much easier. +1 on the power...

    MerCruiser update

Gotta say I've always held the position that most of the salt damage comes during running. I'd love to find some science on surface rust that occurs during a circulating warm water bath vs. sitting exposed to air after a fresh water rinse. If my position is wrong that would mean that salt water...
