    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

I keep finding 'surprises' as I remove the old seat covers. This is the curved backrest to the port settee. . . It has an 'anchor' (yellow arrow) that goes through the middle of the seat foam (red arrow), much like the seat bases have. I was a bit surprised to find an anchoring strip on a...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

I think I got the 'curved' channeling piece figured out . . . . . I just made some angled stitching on each 'channel', starting at the inside of the curve. I'll need only 1 piece like this on the port side settee. The rest are all straight. I'll be ordering material over the next week or so...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

Making progress . . . I started out the day thinking that I am a failure at curved pieces. Well, I was. . . but now I am getting the hang of it. Here is may latest practice attempt trying out the 'banded' ends rather than curved/wrapped. I think this will work. :) . . . . I have a set of top...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

Update - Seat Backs I have been practicing making the end sections of the seat backs using a similar approach to the existing seats. In doing so, I am finding the curves are a bit difficult to get just right. Soooo, I 'think' I have come up with a different approach that is more in my skill...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

More practice . . . I am starting to work on making corner pieces, both from a pattern cutting and stitching perspective. I made this last night, but quickly realized I need to accommodate the seat back taper, so another, more complete test pattern is in the works. I'm hoping the foam...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

More practice . . . I made a second panel to get some more practice in before trying to make the panels for real. Thankfully, I have not ordered the material yet, so this is all on spare vinyl. The real vinyl will have a 1/4" foam backing, so I think it will give the channeling section more...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

Quick Update: As per my other thread on sewing machines, I picked up a Consew 206RB-4 yesterday and have been getting used to it and trying out some stitching on some spare vinyl. Here is a mock-up of the backrest panel with the channeled panel. I have been working on being able to make very...

DIY Upholstery & Canvas Repair Advice

I came across this machine today. . . it is a Consew 206RB-4 . . . the one that I was hoping to find. :) I'll spend the next few days getting it all adjusted, etc. and trying out a few test pieces.

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

I finished seat dis-assembly today. It is a good thing that I am doing this now, because I am finding more rot in the seat structure. These pictures are from the forward section of the 'U' shaped seat. . I filled the back of the Explorer with seat components. I'm going to need to re-fab...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

After sorting through a bunch of sample colors, I think I have come up with a decent color scheme that will be close to the original. . . Pink = Nautolex Capitano 'Party Pink' Purple = Morbern Seabrook 'Purple' Teal = Morbern Sanibel 'Teal' White is going to be Morbern Seabrook 'White' The...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

I took apart one of the seat backs this evening . . . The base board had a bit of rot going on in the top right corner. So, I'll want to make a new board. Hoping that I can do as well as the factory folks. :)

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

Quick update . . . I brought a few of the seat pieces home to begin working on them. The plywood bases are really wet, but still quite solid. So, I'm going to dry them out, treat them for mold and them apply some wood sealer to them. . . maybe just some resin or something similar. This base I...

Formula 330 Cabin Floor & Ceiling Work

I did the aft and mid section about 5 years ago, but stopped at the cabin bulkhead. So, what I am looking at in the cabin is 23 years of age. I drilled into the keel stringer this afternoon, and sure enough, the shavings came out dark & wet. This really shows how far moisture can travel...

Formula 330 Cabin Floor & Ceiling Work

The more I look at the darkened pattern on the cabin floor, it looks like I may be ripping up the floor, instead of doing some patchwork. The 'rot' pattern is that of the underlying stringer/ribs, which tells me the moisture is coming from below. I suspect the structural wood under the floor...

Formula 330 Cabin Floor & Ceiling Work

My boat (Formula 330 Sun Sport) has developed a rather nasty 'banging' sound in the area of the windshield when I hit waves a certain way. This has developed over the past couple of years, and I figure that I will look into it. This year, in particular, I began to notice some gelcoat cracking...

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

Thanks Lowlysubaruguy now that you mention it, I can see how Formula addressed the curves with some extra paneling. It looks like the large white piece of the curves fans out a bit at the top. I'll have to keep that in mind as I make the patterns, etc.

    Time to re-upholster - Formula 330 SS

I noticed towards the end of the season that the vinyl seating in the cockpit of my Formula 330 SS is starting to dry up and crack. . . A few places now, but these things only get worse. So, I am planning on re-doing the seats this winter. I plan on keeping the boat a few more years, and if I...

DIY Upholstery & Canvas Repair Advice

I am compiling the list of fix-its for the boat to do over the winter. I've got a couple of items that will need a sewing machine . . . 1) Vinyl seats are starting to crack. Plan is to make new seat coverings and replace the old. Most of the seats are fairly simple. The helm seat is the most...

    Time for a new boat . . .

I stopped the boat today to anchor for a while and noticed that I was close to the 1,000 hour mark. So I ran the engine for another couple of minutes to get to an even 1,000.00 hours :) I guess I should start working on getting the next boat.

    Mercury 7.5 water pump melt-down . . .

Quick update . . . I have not had much time to fiddle with the Mercury 7.5 . . . Today I was able to get the impeller hub 'sliced' open with a sharp chisel and managed to get the hub and water pump housing off of the drive shaft. . Not much left and part of the impeller was fused to the SS...
