Alpha1 Gen1 Does Not Engage FWD or REV

The guy before you didn't do any maintenance either. Sucks throwing in the towel in June, swapping in a new drive is easy if you can find one. Once the gears grenaded that thickened up the oil. Didn't have time to fully circulate. Conventional wisdom is that your lower is now contaminated and...

    Fire extinguisher system

That looks more like a standard CEL and generic warning at the helm rather than fume detector

Where can I find the oil filter?

Uneven witness marks, but we don't know which way is up

water in engine, is it salvageable?

Idk, tough to assess the block based on those pics. You need to clean out those cylinders at least to see how much rust is there. Head for sure needs addressed, and at least test exhaust components. If getting on the water >> worth more than your time, you can roll the dice. Maybe you can bring...

    letting in water around motor

Or rotten transom. But don't be stupid on this one. That boat is 100% not useable until fixed.

Where can I find the oil filter?

I'm probably in the minority that I just use a hammer... But you already got one off

Alpha1 Gen1 Does Not Engage FWD or REV

Not being completely empty =/= full. That drive gear oil looks original to the boat. If this boat is new to you, you need to do all of the maintenance that's been ignored. A new SEI drive is your quickest way back on the water, or something off CL if you can find it

Where can I find the oil filter?

Ha, didn't know you did the pontoon seat refit as well. Remote oil filter was the best thing I did when I swapped engines. Gotta put in some ball valves for winterizing, and it will almost be as easy to maintain as a 470 :)

Alpha1 Gen1 Does Not Engage FWD or REV

No... That cable is just a continuity wire, nothing to do with your issue. Agree with @kenny nunez and @dubs283 that the overheat + not getting into gear would suspect shredding gears, broken outdrive driveshaft or spun engine coupler. 1. I'm not real clear on what happens when you activate the...

    1990 Wellcraft 223 Eclipse

Wondering if anyone has replaced a curved glass windshield with flat glass. I bet a whole custom flat glass windshield would cost less than 1 piece of curved glass specific to that boat.

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Whoops yeah you're right, compression on #1. But if he's putting air into 3 and 5 at that point their intake valves might not be closed.

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Whoa... You're either on compression OR exhaust stroke on #1. Not necessarily on 3 and/or 5. Without looking, certainly possible you have open intake valves on those cylinders, so your test might be wrong Edit: and yes, that's the timing mark on the composite cover

Removing Castle Nut or Retainer Ring on a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen One Sterndrive.

I thought you found the problem in the upper? Yeah, definitely pressure test before you get too deep in the weeds

Ran with missing quad ring, should I expect problems?

The drives, like most things marine, will last forever if you keep the oil in, and the water out.

Ran with missing quad ring, should I expect problems?

You didn't do your local wildlife any favors, but if your oil remained full and no water in there you should be fine
