Recent Issue of Boating Magazine - Article on Flotation

The July/August edition of Boating Magazine has an article on the USCG's testing of flotation in recreational boats (20 feet and under). Interesting read for those who can get a copy or view online. The boat featured in the article (19 foot I/O bowrider) barely passed the test. The article also...

    A somewhat interesting discovery . . .

I have discovered that while most all of my posts return an error message, the post actually took. What I do now is once I hit the 'post' button, I quickly open the thread in another window. Most of the time I see my post actually there, even though the window that I posted from is still...

    Formula 330SS Bulkhead Replacement

Here is the storage compartment floor after fiberglassing. This was a bit of a challenge, since the space is very confined, and I wanted to glass the entire floor area after the tabbing was done. I could not easily reach all of the areas to lay down the CSM and wet it out, basically, I would be...

    Formula 330SS Bulkhead Replacement

With the posts lost a while back., it is hard to figure out where I was in the process. I think it was right before I foamed in the fuel tank. Anyway, I thought that I would do a 'catch-up post' (or two) of the steps that are missing from the thread, Here is the fuel tank after it was foamed...

    Formula 330SS Bulkhead Replacement

I am pretty much finished with the bulkhead replacement project . . . just a few odds and ends. Here is a picture of the new bulkhead, now that all the wiring, plumbing and hardware has been put back on place. I am looking forward to see how the boat feels with all of this repair work done...

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

Here is the whole business put together . . . I finally got to use my fancy dial torque wrench. The specification for the rolling torque is 6-10 in-lbs. I set the bearings to about 9 in-lbs, since they are new. Then you have to synchronize the gearing in the upper unit before inserting the...

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

I finished up the outdrive work today by installing the drive shaft bearing for the port outdrive and putting it all back together. Between doing the u-joints and the bearing, it is pretty tedious work, but probably not the sort of thing to rush through. Here are a few pictures from the day...

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

here is a quick peek at one of the u-joints that I removed . . . interesting cupping pattern. I am surprised that I did not notice more vibration from the outdrive. (I noticed a slight vibration last summer). So, my theory about the rusty u-joint, is that there was some moisture in the...

    I found my old boat . . . .

. . . listed on boston.craigslist.org  :) 1991 Formula 242SS I sold it in July 2012 and it looks like it is for sale again. I occasionally have wondered what became of it. Looks about the same as when I had it. :thumb:

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

Well, my trip back from California started out OK, but thunder storms delayed flights getting in and out of the Chicago airports. So, we got stuck at Midway airport for a few hours. . . Finally landed in Boston at 3:30 AM. . . home at about 5:00 AM. I had 2 heavy packages waiting for me though ...

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

Re: Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . . I managed to finish up the oil seals on the starboard outdrive today. . . I could not find a slide hammer/puller in town . . . I guess most of this stuff is sold over the Internet these days. I tried several methods to pop out the oil seals and...

    CSM Fibers Sticking Out!!

Re: CSM Fibers Sticking Out!! +1 to the comment about being a bit short on the resin in the first picture. To go around corners such as you are doing, a trick that you can do is to wrap the piece(s) in plastic and stretch it fairly tight, right after you apply the CSM and the resin. You...

Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

Re: Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . . Never mind . . . I got it :) I used the heat gun some more to expand the housing a bit and it finally loosened up. Out came the bearing carrier . . . I took out the old oil seals . . . looks like the originals. The bearing carrier is showing a...

    Formula 330SS Bulkhead Replacement

Re: Formula 330SS Bulkhead Replacement Fuel tank installation Update . . . Today was the day to put the fuel tank back into the boat. First I did some final fiberglass work by bonding the cockpit sole to the stringer grid. There seemed to be 4 places where I could fairly easily bond the 2...
