New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

If you were in Long Island I could send you to the best fiberglass shop around, Raybo Marine in Lindenhurst NY but you will have to find a place local to you and see what they say.

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Usually the rubber coated flappers fail from an overheat…not from age per se. With the Volvo I think they sold a tall elbow kit including additional parts (taller exhaust elbows and a Y pipe with taller ends that extend above the water line. Of course this would require pulling the engine to...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

You should be able to get the cam specs from the engine builder. What I do not like about those platforms is this, when they are that low it traps water underneath it and that can increase the hydrostatic pressure from the stern wave forcing water up the exhaust. That and it’s in the middle of...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Well if you measured right your elbows are definitely too low and if the boat is holding water somewhere weighing it is the only way to know for sure, or removing fittings on the transom to see if you have water weeping out of them. You have some options but you may need a good ‘glass shop to...

    Saltwater eating my trailers...

The cold galvanizing stuff really does work I’ve used it on a few spots on the trailer over the years. Both the spray and brush on are good…

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Well what I might be tempted to do, if it were my boat is remove that extended swim platform if possible. I have never been a fan of those they add weight in the worst possible place for inboard engines and the weight of the water washing up over it adds weight and leverage on top of that. In...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

No in this set up Volvo in their “wisdom” removed the flappers. After watching the vids I would for sure: Get an exhaust flapper and replace the exhaust tube with it, if that fully solves the issue then great but if not you pretty much HAVE TO FIT TALLER ELBOWS no matter what Chapparal or Volvo...

The problem with a filter for the cooling system is that once the block/heads have flaking rust it will never stop, it's more or less constant. So any filter will get clogged sooner or later.

Mercruiser MAG 350 MPI 2005 -No compression on one cylinder

yep you may need to break out the 1/2 drive electric impact gun, that's how I got mine off and didn't break even one bolt.

Mercruiser MAG 350 MPI 2005 -No compression on one cylinder

Yep blown HG can let water in cyls and that will eventually cause valves to stick. If you fix it promptly you might be able to save it. Do not let it sit like that all winter though or you will be buying a reman or new engine in the spring! Had the same problem 5 years ago and wound up...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

only thing you can do is weigh the boat and compare to their specs. Its not that unusual for boat companies to get the static water line issue wrong and it got worse with the Vortec series of engines. Everyone liked the extra power but static water line became even more critical.

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

OK well I think that's too low. Mine were like 14-15". Think about getting the taller elbows, every boat sits a bit different in the water, and you don't want a recurrance of salt water in the cyls. If you don't want to get involved in fitting taller elbows, then get the flapper at least. Keep...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

am I reading this right, from the gunnel to the water line you are 35", from the gunnel to the tops of the elbows you are 22" so 35"-22"=13", looks like you are right at the spec. I'd find a flapper to fit in place of that exhaust tube, measure the outside diameter of the flange, to prevent a...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Looks like yours came with the exhaust tube instead of the exhaust bellows. And yes there is a small bellows at the top of the shift cable tube inside the boat where the shift cable comes out. This one normally is part of a a new shift cable assembly, but probably be replaced separately if it...

Yep the most I had to raise mine is 1/2 way up just run at idle in the shallows I have never had to change the ujoints in this boat…they are original….

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

He did the u joint bellows but not the exhaust bellows. Part #21, there's a hose clamp on the fwd end and a C-clip style retainer on the aft end. You'd have to pull the drive to install this. Either that, or remove the exhaust tube and install a proper size flapper.

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

That can be tricky to measure but here's how I did it. Took a piece of wood long enough to overhang the gunnels on both sides. And a tape measure. Then hung over the gunnel and measured down from the wood on the gunnels (placed right over the exhaust elbows) to the water. Now, record that...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PLKD timing mark out of scale

OK the white line on the harmonic balancer should be at zero on the timing tab when your #1 cyl is at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke, this is what you have to verify. So when the white line and the zero mark on the timing tab line up, your engine should be at TDC for the compression...
