    Fuel Problem

I recall my mechanics (these were some of the best OMC mechanics around) talking about certain OMC carbs that were prone to warpage, not sure if that's the case here though. That's one area where an inboard or I/O is simpler than a carbed outboard, I can't imagine having SIX carbs to deal with...

    Exhaust Elbow Fit Problem

It almost looks as if the elbows are too long to mate with the Y pipe. Back when I replaced the heads on my 4.3 I also had to change the exhaust since I was on my last set of OMC bat wings. I REALLY wanted to convert to the Merc dry joint system because it is a better design no doubt. But the...

    Water when pulling stern drive

If you’re doing your own drive service each year a drive jack is a good investment

Don S Winterization link not working

If you wait to pull it when an “issue” arises that “issue” can wind up costing a grand or more due to a leaking bellows. Even in fresh water never removing an outdrive can result in one that….can’t be removed! Without paying a small mechanic to jam himself into the bilge and cut the driveshaft...

Don S Winterization link not working

On the OMC Cobra remember there are 3 drain plugs on the pivot housing (the part of the transom mount that the drive bolts to) that should be removed and rodded out to drain ant trapped water. One on the port side and 2 on the starboard side. Have to tilt the drive up a bit to see them. Water...

    Another winterization question

About the other question I like to drain and backfill because: You know it’s totally drained AF will not be diluted You can leave the AF in to reduce internal corrosion, that’s the whole point of using AF, and in later Mercruiser manuals that’s how they say to do it. If you are located where it...

    Another winterization question

They pretty much always have a cooler in line with the raw water intake hose, sometimes behind the engine right where the raw water intake hose comes out of the transom mount. If they are mounted vertically or diagonally they may self drain but if it’s mounted horizontally they have to be...

Ted I know you’re familiar with ocean conditions being from Cape Cod however I know LI Sound can get quite dicey depending upon the winds and tides. If you do decide to go that way check out U of CT’s my sound website they have weather buoys across LI Sound giving real time wind and wave...

    Another winterization question

Ahh with a FWC engine your heat exchanger (expensive to replace) has raw water in one half of it and must be drained as does the raw water intake hose!

Trust me the LIE to the Clearview to Throgs Neck to I95 North will be a trial all the way back to Cape Cod. Strongly consider LIE east to exit 70, to Sound Ave follow it to the end to the Orient Point Ferry. This will bring you to I 95 in New London Ct; much nicer!

Manually drain, poke all the drain holes put gasket sealer on the drain plug threads replace plugs manually back fill the engine from the top end of the big hose that connects to the thermo housing fill the manifolds via the feed hoses from the thermo housing reconnect hoses leave AF in because...

    "Fogging" new VP 4.3?

The issue with these is that even if its a non cat engine the sensors in the intake tract can be damaged by fogging. I would look and see what Mercury says if Volvo does not give an exact %age of 2 stroke fuel. On my old 4.3 with the Quadrajet 4bbl I get two cans of fogging oil and go to town!

Those of us on Long Island really wish that for one time Robert Moses got his way and the bridge across LI Sound would have been built. It would have connected with Route 135 (Seaford/Oyster Bay Expressway) and gone across to Ct. Thereby allowing us to avoid traffic in western Nassau, Queens...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

And the pinion gear is not being fully extended, which could cause the grinding. Check voltage at the large terminal on the solenoid that is fed from the battery switch common, or battery if no switch. Should be at least battery voltage. Then disconnect the yellow/red wire from the solenoid...

    Winterizing Question

Dumping in the AF is more than adequate. All you are doing there is keeping out air which reduces corrosion. No need to start engine. PS on the subject of AF, if it gets really cold where you are, I would not use the -50 or -60 they get hard at about 10*F (put some in a freezer to see), I use...
