    Time for a ‘new’ boat?

PPS About I/O vs O/B went for a ride in the nearly new Chaparral my brother bought. Mercs new 4.5 V6 with 200 hp. I have to say compared to the old engines it is very nice! Accessibility is not good but for him it’s a non issue he will take it in for maintenance & repairs. So I take back some of...

    Time for a ‘new’ boat?

I think any trailer-able boat will sell faster with a trailer. For us we are limited with storage so can really only have boats in the 20’ range anyway.

5.7 EFI running hotter on starboard exhaust

What your stat seems to be doing is sticking open (120*) then not opening fast enough or far enough (180* is too hot). Get a new stat test it in a pot of water and install a new circulating pump.

    Lost power

Could be that, could also be the anti siphon valve on the gas tank, pick up tube or tank vent. You could try to run it (careful with hooking it up) on a portable tank to rule that out.

replacing water intake hose and found this:

Just be careful to check that clamp at the start of each season. I had that hose pop off on my Cobra and it overheated the engine and filled the bilge with sea water. Not a fun day and the engine ran fine 2 more seasons and blew the Head gaskets at the end of ‘16. Did a top end overhaul in ‘17...

    Water in Oil

Yep that’s a shame but these problems have to be rectified fast. I was able to do that with my old 4.3. Got the water out fast drained water and changed oil numerous times pickled the engine and installed reman heads a few months later.

Overheated, need help identifying pink liquid-

Yep might have melted a ps line or power trim line if equipped. Things to replace: Any rubber hoses aft of the exhaust elbows and any rubber hoses, cables or wiring in close proximity to the exhaust system. Exhaust flappers if so equipped.

OMC cobra trim only going down not up

Exhaust bellows not critical at all but the one above is critical. You need to make sure each relay has power, ground and is getting the up or down signal. The problem can be in the connections at the relay or at the remote control switch/wiring Concentrate on the blue wire that is the up signal...

OMC cobra trim only going down not up

The older Cobras use the big relays like the old Ford starter relays. Make sure all the terminals are clean; and they have power and ground. From the remote control the blue wire is the up signal and the green is down. Sometimes the wires break inside the control.

Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-D (PCV valve popping off while running - carbon buildup on boat thru exhaust)

for it to really function as a PVC it has to be connected to manifold vacuum, I"d like to see where it is connected on the carb.

    Time for a ‘new’ boat?

Hello Ted, What was the engine misfortune? I must have missed it... Anyway I found it interesting that you will stick with the I/O, there are some advantages but the main thing that would stop me (smaller boats) is bad access and cat converter exhaust. The complexity now in inboards has caused...

Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-D (PCV valve popping off while running - carbon buildup on boat thru exhaust)

If there is an actual PVC valve in the valve cover instead of just a hose leading to the flame arrestor to take care of blow by, yes if the valve gets stuck blow by building up in the valve cover has to escape and can blow it out if there is a lot of blow by. That Holley carb does have the...

5.7l mercruiser gen 1 alpha 1 to vortec head swap problem please help...

The QJet I have on mine is the original carb this engine came with and when I replaced the heads 4 years ago I stuck with the pre Vortec heads so I didn’t have to change the jetting in the carb which is pretty close to ideal judging by how the plugs look (light brown). I agree with signing up at...

How to tel if boat will over heat in the water

If its the same as the Cobras that housing has a rubber ring inside to hold the 'stat in the housing. Might want to replace that ring too if it hasn't been done in a long time. The standard stat was a 160* unit.

How to tel if boat will over heat in the water

Agreed water test is the only way. Try to do it early in the AM when no one is around, let it idle to warm up and see what it does. Perferably till the thermostat opens, you may have to run it above idle a bit (1200-1500 rpm) to get it up to temp. Just make sure the water is deep enough to fully...

    7.4GL temp sender info needed

I think these engines used a 140* thermostat vs other Volvo engines that used a 160* stat. I actually tried this same stat in my OMC because the lower temp stat is better for raw water use in salt water. And it does show on the gauge approx 120* at idle. At higher speeds it rises as expected to...
