5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

you see that pic above, video that, when you are shifting from in gear to neutral, then we can see if your esa is sticking on, or not. Shift from in-gear to N, then shift from N to in gear. That will answer that question at least.

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

OK then have someone watch or even video the shift linkage on the engine when you shift from in gear to neutral in the water, and post it up. Then we can see for sure.

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

Yes the cable adjustments are made with the drive off, so boat has to be out of the water. Question, does the boat shift into gear easily and shift out of gear easily? If so, you may have more of a tune up issue than a shifting issue. If you can easily shift out of gear to neutral when in the...

    New motor knocking???

Here's what mine looked like. Looking at your engine running, the oil itself doesn't look like it has water in it....but does assembly lube really look like that?

    New motor knocking???

PS: I did a top end overhaul on mine 4 years ago and engine noise was basically the same after the replacement of cylinder heads. What you're calling assembly lube looks like water in the oil....I did a top end overhaul because I had 2 blown head gaskets due to an overheat 3 years prior, the...

    New motor knocking???

The older pre Vortecs had adjustable valve trains but that was changed to a net lash system (not sure of what year that changed) that’s not adjustable. However a defective lifter could still make noise. It also could be a timing chain with too much slack. I’d try removing the SERP belt just...

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

I think some of these had the engine oil cooler on the side of the engine not in the rear like the P/S cooler...

Help Diagnosing carb vs ignition problem, 5.7 mercruiser

Well that's a good simple solution!

Help Diagnosing carb vs ignition problem, 5.7 mercruiser

Ok interesting I was following your thread on THT as well. 1) it revs up and holds the higher rpm without dying, so the accell pump is working and main system is likely clear 2) the dying at idle suggests either excessively lean or rich idle setting: a) as recommended the choke should be open or...

Outdrive does not want to re -install in boat

I have a Cobra not an Alpha, so I just R+R it in neutral, but what I have found that helps may apply to the Alpha as well: 1)get a drive jack this helps you get the drive at exactly the right height to get the driveshaft to line up with the coupler...it also REALLY saves your lower back...

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

With a properly tuned igniton system and clean carburetor the OMC ESA system should not stall the engine. Normally these engines came with a Prestolite points distributor and a Rochester 2bbl or 4bbl carb. Both require maintenance for the engine to run correctly and not stall. The points and...

    Exhaust Bellow

Nothing does. That entire system of the transom mount exhaust housing and the exhaust Y pipe are full of water up to a level about even with the bottom edge of the exhaust manifolds when the boat is in the water. This is called static water line. Also why some engines suffer water ingestion and...

    Trailer Tires

Sounds like you’re getting there.... One other thing radials vs bias ply, the sidewall of a bias tire is the full thickness of the tread vs the thinner more flexible sidewalls of a radial tire. So if you have bad beat up ramps like my local one the bias tire will be more durable. The same...

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

It’s a cooler for the P/S system. The incoming seawater cools the P/S fluid. Most of these engines don’t have an engine oil cooler; this is why a heavier weight oil is recommended than what’s typical for auto use.

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

I’ve done it (Cobra is the same as the Volvo) on my boat there is an access panel that is above the back of the engine that comes off so you can get at it.

    Oil type

Nope mine’s an OMC Cobra with dog clutch shifting so it really doesn’t matter which oil I use. With a cone clutch like Volvo uses it can matter so I’d use the VP gear oil...

    Oil type

If I recall V/P used to recommend a syn straight 30, however this was difficult to find and later on they switched to a syn 10w/40. What most people seem to use is Chevron Delo or Shell Rotella 15w/40 or the Merc/Quicksilver 25/40.

    Oil type

On these engines the main thing is to not use a low viscosity automotive oil like 5w/30 or 10/30. You can use straight weights like straight 30, or 40, a 20w/50 or you also can use the Mercruiser/Quicksilver 25/40 or the 15w/40 used in both diesel and gas engines. The idea is that marine engines...

    Condensate in manifolds?

Certainly with the weather conditions in the northeast it’s possible just as you will find the engine covered with moisture on the outside when it’s humid and the temp drops to a level that causes moisture to condense out of the air. This is why engines that are not used in the off season should...

    Trailer Tires

Honestly I'd get the Kenda Load Stars, I've been using them since 2004 and never even one flat or other failure. As I said I would not buy far eastern made radial trailer tires, I would buy the Goodyear Endurance but they are at a different price point. Low speed towing to the ramp/home/storage...
