Looks like you blew a head gasket ou have a cracked head. Time to check compression and air pressure test the cooling system.

Riser Extension Blocks - Full Closed Cooling ???

What about the gaskets for the ones with the 4 channels connecting the larger water ports? I'm thinking they might be more prone to leak which is always a concern with wet exhaust joints.

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

Sure thing. If you want the paint to last: after removing the paint from the sealing surfaces of the manifolds and elbows (where the gasket goes) paint the with Rustolieum black with a brush much less messy than spray and that paint will last with no rust the next season. The thin coat of spray...

Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine

I think the Mercarb is a re-worked Rochester 2GV 2bbl carb. If you want to really wake up that sleepy little 4.3 next time try a Quadrajet, Holley 4160 or an Edelbrock 1409. Of the 3 I am most familiar with the Quadrajet which is such an advanced design it functions as a variable venturi carb...

Maintenance on garboard or brass plug that is leaking.

Main thing with a job like this is to deal with any possible wood rot. You want to dig out as much as you can and dry it all out, and fill with thickened epoxy. Then when installing your new garboard drain I'd use 3M 4200 to seal the opening and screw holes. The best way to deal with the screw...

Opinions on shop's quoted Bravo 3 maintenance cost

not only that here's the bizarreness of it: diameter measured in inches lug nuts in fractions of an inch in certain cases but at least 19mm = 3/4" trailer lug nuts are still 13/16th like in the old days! tire section width in mm but wheel diameter in inches as an example: we have a 245(section...

not only did I have to pick up an 18mm socket but I also picked up an 18mm ratcheting box end swivel head wrench for certain jobs where it just fits in better. "there is nothing so pleasant as just the right tool for the job"

Maintenance on garboard or brass plug that is leaking.

Yep this might be where you get to learn a bit of fiberglass/wood repair. Hopefully there is not much wood rot in the core of the transom. I would dig as much out as I could and really dry it out as much as possible before refilling with thickened epoxy. Then make sure to seal the opening and...

Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine

Agreed that’s the main thing it’s not a super critical spec esp with raw water cooling there is not much pressure in the system. I’ve see Merc Perfect Seal, OMC gasket sealer, Permatex thread sealer and Permatex Aviation all recommended for this application. All are non hardening sealers as far...

don't forget to use sealer on the head bolt threads. I used Permatex Aviation.

Leaving I/O in water all year round?

I did both the bellows on my OMC Cobra (no need to do shift cable bellows, its inside the boat like a Volvo SX) and total parts cost was about $100 bucks with OEM parts. Took me about 3 hrs total. Glad I have an outdrive jack and the correct tools including an alignment tool. If you store the...

Ha, I've been training myself to think in metric for many years, now its 'almost' second nature, and the ironic thing is all US cars have been metric for many years except: diameter of wheel rims, still in inches and lug bolts in some cases, but 19mm and 3/4" for lug bolts are nearly the same...

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

No worries, Volvo charges a premium price for their parts and my goal was always to get the best parts without getting robbed by either OMC/BRP or Volvo. So when I did my exhaust conversion I used the Barr aftermarket exhaust and Volvo 90* exhaust adapter hoses and aluminum exhaust pipes. I knew...

Engine conversion - Is it doable?

Your best bet is to find out what rear main seal/flywheel design will work with your present Volvo drive and get a reman V8 that will work with that. As far as EFI vs carb I vote for carb, lower initial cost much lower repair cost no added wiring etc. Keep in mind people with older Merc or Volvo...

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

You don't have to use Volvo parts for manifolds and elbows, get the Barr kit it is just as good and you can use the same fittings for the check valve. The only OE Volvo parts I would use are the check valves and the 90* exhaust pipes.

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

OK the OSCO conversion probably didn't allow for the fact that the Vortec engines due to the camshaft timing developed more vaccum in the exhaust system and would pull water up the exhaust (exhaust reversion). What Volvo did when they switched to the Vortec engines was change the shape of the...

OMC 5.7 cobra, carb (mod) from Holley4160 to Edelbrock(1409)

For the fuel line you might have to use a flexible line with a banjo bolt type set up. This will allow the fuel line to clear the shifter bracket/bell crank

Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine

You can, I don't see any harm it could do but Fel/Pro in their instructions says to put on dry. I used the sealer because there is often a little pitting around the water outlets on the manifolds, even on old heads that have not been redone. I got the heads from a local machine shop here in Long...
