Gathering Components for adding GPS to Older VHF

I’d try contacting Furuno tech support and ask them how to do what you’re trying to do.

Merc 4.3l timing question, BTDC mark

It’s a little confusing because on the older engines the scale was on the timing tab and the mark was on the balancer (still is) now what they are using is a single mark on the timing chain cover and the scale in degrees on the balancer. Kind of what Ford used on their V8s. This changed probably...

    Engines: 2 x 4.3GXi or 1 x 5.7Gxi

A boat that large should have a big block but twin 5.7s would be a good package. The 4.3s max out at about 225 hp depending on how they are set up, while the 5.7s are not that much more powerful but have more torque.

Gathering Components for adding GPS to Older VHF

It sounds like that you'd need that converter if one component uses NMEA2000 and one uses NMEA183 which is the older system. What do the GPS and your radio use? The radio I bought this summer uses NMEA183 just like my GPS so it was an easy connection. It appears that these can be connected just...

1996 4.3 Mercruiser water in my oil? Hoping not!

For a starter mount to crack it almost has to be a hydrolock situation but starter bolts that are too long, or loose can cause that as well, due to allowing the starter to shift under torque. It may be that the engine sat with water in one or more cyls from the leaky exhaust and the cyls rusted...

Gathering Components for adding GPS to Older VHF

I’ve done this twice with the same Garmin GPS and 2 different Standard Horizon VHFs (the original that I bought 15 years ago quit transmitting this summer so I replaced it with a similar unit). It can be confusing because the tx and rx wires may not be color coded in a standardized way. You...

5.7Gi-F Updates with some lessons learned.

I always open the engine cover before starting and sniff for fumes and listen for odd noises. Leave an IR temp gym on the boat to check elbow & manifold temps. I keep a digital volt/ohmmeter on the boat and a test light for checking circuits. I also installed a gas vapor detector some years back...

Is this an OEM Carb Kit?

I can't answer this but I bought an OE OMC carb kit that was actually a re-labelled Sierra kit. I used it and it was fine but for the next time I bought a Quadrajet kit from Cliff's High Performance Quadrajets which includes more and better parts (the OE kit from OMC doesn't include the...

1988 Merc 5.0XL with alpha drives engine replacement suggestions

If you do: figure a way to organize the parts first and take lots of pics. Label stuff as you take it off. the intake manifold can be tough to get off, what I wound up having to do was heat the manifold with a heat gun around the joint with the cyl heads (be careful) and then use a couple of...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

It depends on the oil pan design, if the plug is at the very bottom it will get more, if on the side it may leave a bit, but still in all that really doesn't matter as long as you are doing regular oil changes. I've always been surprised at the lack of sludge in my old engine, with 1x a year oil...

    Flapper valve

Yes even with a closed system you have raw water coming the cooling system to cool the heat exchanger and that raw water has to exit. The flapper is there to keep water from backing up the exhaust into the cyls. The water level in your Y pipe might be as high as the top of it when the boat is in...

RPM's surging, think I fixed the problem

Thought so, watched your vid on the bellows replacement again. Nice Job! on my old 4.3 I use a set of older plugs when I fog it in the fall. Then I start it up and after the fogging oil burns off I use a set of clean plugs for the season. I have a Prestolite points distributor in mine with...

RPM's surging, think I fixed the problem

Are those the original plugs, what's on the body of the plugs, paint overspray or rust? I agree you might want to get in the habit of changing those caps every season, start with a new one.

1988 Merc 5.0XL with alpha drives engine replacement suggestions

Hey Charlie my first tearing down of an engine was this job. I figured I had nothing to lose. I used SK Speed's machine shop, I know you're in Long Island correct? The hard part is keeping dirt out of the engine keeping all the parts labeled and clean and organized. I didn't lose or break one...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Try to find a local VP dealer who will order parts for you. Might cost a bit more but worth it. My shop can order V/P, BRP, Merc, Sierra, Barr etc and get them in a day or 2 and I never pay shipping. He also gives me a discount. I just hope he stays in business! Luckily he's right next to a big...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

This is where I'd say that OE is not always better than aftermarket. The Barr exhaust I bought was packed with styrofoam and bubble wrap and showed up in perfect condition. Also, I bought through a dealer local to me and he would inspect parts before you take them to make sure they were good, no...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

looks like this was dropped after machining, I see a chunk taken out and some dings in the sealing surface...I'd send that back.
